00:27
could vice of council discuss helping
00:30
safety and contracts and the employment
00:39
history of particular persons can I have
00:42
a motion to go into executive session at
00:44
6:42 I'm able to go to executive session
00:47
okay
00:50
second please second all in favor aye
00:56
okay to return to the public session I
01:11
move outside I have a second one second
01:15
okay all in favor mm-hmm okay can we
01:20
rise for the Pledge of Allegiance led by
01:22
halle McCall we have a flag in my window
01:27
I pledge allegiance to the flag of the
01:34
United States of America and to the
01:37
Republic for which it stands indivisible
01:42
with liberty and justice for all
01:51
okay I know we were starting with the
01:54
president's report I didn't know if
01:57
there were any matters that I would
01:58
allow someone to start out with if Josh
02:00
wants to give any instructions to the
02:02
attendees at this point or we're fine
02:05
and we can do that when we get to public
02:07
comment if that's workable yeah I think
02:09
we could wait till public comment okay
02:11
thank you so much I would like to start
02:16
this evening I just have a few words and
02:19
thank you those of you who are attending
02:21
for joining us tonight I just want to
02:24
say a couple of things in the midst of a
02:26
pandemic and challenges that none of us
02:29
have ever faced during our lifetimes I
02:32
know that I speak on behalf of the
02:34
entire board that we are extremely
02:36
grateful and blessed to have the
02:38
district leadership team that we do
02:40
Christine has been working tirelessly
02:43
around the clock alongside Adam and Tony
02:45
and John and Lisa our district clerk and
02:48
countless other faculty members and to
02:53
navigate a situation that is changing by
02:58
the hour sometimes by the minute I have
03:01
to say that under Christine and Adams
03:02
guidance and leadership we've also been
03:05
preparing to deliver our curriculum
03:07
remotely for a long time now and as a
03:08
result we are more than ready to begin
03:11
distance learning tomorrow and shout out
03:13
to Josh and his team for the incredible
03:15
help on that our administrative sacs and
03:18
faculty held a base camp I learning
03:20
professional development day yesterday
03:22
inviting many other districts around the
03:25
counting beyond to participate and I
03:27
think that anyone seeing that agenda or
03:29
attending any one of the sessions would
03:31
agree that we are in fact in the
03:33
forefront nationally in terms of
03:35
distance learning so the bottom line is
03:37
that I am sure there will be some kinks
03:39
to work out as we take on this remote
03:41
learning journey together beginning
03:43
tomorrow but we or I should say they
03:46
they have got this our students aren't
03:50
very capable and excellent hands and so
03:52
a huge thank you to our district
03:55
administration from all of us I really
03:57
wanted to say that
03:59
I'm sure Christine will be talking more
04:01
tonight about where we are and what the
04:03
latest updates are with respect to how
04:05
Kovan 19 the cover 19 outbreak continues
04:08
to affect our school year but I just
04:11
want to mention a couple of items we as
04:14
a board will always prioritize the
04:16
health and safety of our students and
04:18
our community we all want to get back to
04:21
our daily lives as soon as possible and
04:23
excuse me but any decision on returning
04:26
to school will be made along with the
04:28
superintendent and based on consultation
04:30
with all appropriate health and
04:32
educational and governmental authorities
04:35
while we await word on how this crisis
04:38
will affect our upcoming events we will
04:40
move forward with our scheduled meetings
04:42
and our budget presentations meeting
04:44
remotely by assumed as we are doing
04:46
tonight and with respect to the budget
04:49
vote on May 13th I wanted to mention
04:51
that the community will also be voting
04:53
at that time to elect two members of the
04:56
school board my term and Vicky's tips
04:58
term are up this year and for anyone
05:01
interested in running for the board
05:03
I wanted to state that you still can get
05:05
a nominating petition by emailing or
05:08
calling our district clerk
05:10
Lisa Lisa I'm so real done excuse me
05:14
work out any details with you to get you
05:17
a nominating petition whether it's via
05:18
snail mail email etc as for whether the
05:22
dates for the required signatures which
05:24
is currently April 20th or the date of
05:26
the election will be extended we do not
05:28
know that yet but we will keep you
05:30
posted so I just wanted to make those
05:32
announcements for tonight and then I
05:34
would like to hand it off to Christine
05:35
for the superintendence report so I just
05:39
want to start by letting our students
05:42
know that we're thinking of you and we
05:44
can't wait for the day where we can open
05:46
up our doors again and welcome you back
05:48
to school in the meantime I'm so
05:52
grateful to our faculty our staff our
05:54
administrative team who have been
05:56
working nonstop to get ready for our
05:58
soft launch tomorrow of our eye learning
06:01
program and we have been checking in
06:04
every day staff has been working over
06:07
the over the past two weeks to make sure
06:10
that we have an opportunity to live
06:12
a meaningful curriculum in a virtual way
06:15
and we're going to make the best out of
06:19
a very difficult situation and I want
06:21
our families to know that we're here
06:23
every step of the way and even though we
06:24
may not be able to see each other in
06:26
person there's many ways that we can
06:28
stay connected with each other to help
06:30
support our kids through this
06:32
unprecedented time so I think let me
06:36
just talk about a few areas that I'd
06:38
like to highlight since we've we've had
06:41
to make some adjustments to our
06:43
practices due to the coronavirus so I
06:47
don't Adam can you move the thing okay
06:50
so the first thing you are having a
06:54
virtual board meeting and for our board
06:57
meetings moving forward until we're back
06:58
in session will be a live streaming them
07:01
and we'll place the link under the
07:03
agenda but we also in the traditional
07:06
space but we'll also put it on the main
07:07
page so we'll have an advertisement like
07:10
that on the main page so it's easy for
07:12
people to link in we had to make some
07:14
adjustments to the school calendar which
07:16
I announced to our parents last night
07:18
over email there was a lot of
07:21
conversation around students being in
07:24
attendance and waiving requirements and
07:28
how do we do that within the constructs
07:30
of our teachers contract because they
07:32
can only work so many days so the Board
07:35
of Education met earlier this week and
07:39
we came up with a contract a calendar
07:44
that we feel would best support our
07:45
families and our staff during this time
07:48
so as it we stated in our email
07:50
correspondence yesterday the only
07:52
adjustment that we've made to our
07:54
calendar is that we've moved the Friday
07:56
before Memorial Day which was a original
07:59
vacation day to to April 13th and we
08:03
have adjusted our half-day professional
08:06
development moving that from Thursday to
08:08
Friday and we plan to welcome our
08:12
students back on April 14th but again we
08:14
will only be doing that if it is safe to
08:17
do so
08:17
so for the next two weeks starting
08:21
Monday up until April break Friday
08:25
February 1st there
08:26
we will be fully into our i learning
08:28
curriculum with their soft launch on
08:31
thursday and friday and dr. peace will
08:33
talk a little bit more about that a
08:34
minute the next one a few things that i
08:39
important press to mention we've a push
08:41
kindergarten registration out to to May
08:44
4th again we will have to make an
08:46
adjustment if necessary based on what's
08:49
going on in our community but I just
08:51
wanted to share that with our families
08:52
and of course that we put that out there
08:53
to the larger community next slide we
08:58
are in the process dr. Santana's is
09:00
leading the effort to help identify
09:04
which families need assistance with
09:06
child care because they are either
09:09
healthcare providers or first responders
09:12
who need to support members of our
09:15
community dealing with medical issues so
09:18
we're in the process of making sure that
09:21
we are reaching out to those families
09:24
and developing appropriate way to help
09:27
support child care as indicated by the
09:32
governor's executive order we are making
09:37
our our meal program available to our
09:39
families who qualify for free or reduced
09:41
lunch all of which have been notified
09:43
that we will have a pickup opportunity
09:46
three days a week out of Grilli to help
09:48
support them with breakfast and lunch
09:50
and I'd like to thank our director of
09:51
food services
09:52
Theodore McManus for helping organize
09:54
this for our families and then I'd like
09:59
Adam to talk a little bit about what's
10:01
been happening here over the past two
10:03
weeks as we prepared to help support our
10:06
students through online instruction so
10:08
Adam since we thought that the
10:12
coronavirus may become problematic for
10:15
us we really did quickly to enhancing
10:20
some professional development around
10:22
what a distance learning model might
10:24
look like and the tools that teachers
10:25
would use for a distance learning model
10:27
so you really geared that up it was we
10:30
were fortunate that we had that
10:30
superintendent conference day on the
10:32
13th we had planned a superintendent
10:33
conference day around the I
10:36
and we came up with this logo and theme
10:38
I teach I kids and we had a variety of
10:42
presentations and we actually included
10:44
our SEL fellows our social emotional
10:47
learning fellows which were the adult
10:49
fellowship we also have a student
10:50
fellowship that Christine and Zhou and
10:53
that work work with and we included them
10:55
in the day so we actually had a half day
10:58
where we allow teachers to do some
10:59
preparation work and planning for what
11:01
we thought may be an inevitable closure
11:03
and then we never have the staff watch
11:07
the movie like which is all about
11:09
basically students these days and have a
11:12
social media and how this generation is
11:14
different than previous generations and
11:15
then we transitioned into a variety of
11:17
choice based learning activities
11:19
throughout the course of the day and we
11:21
actually included quite a few activities
11:23
around distance learning and tools that
11:26
would help support teachers in that
11:27
transition so so that I teach I kids
11:29
actually dovetail pretty nicely with
11:31
this pivot to what we thought might be a
11:33
transition to distance learning and it
11:35
turns out that that's where we're that's
11:36
where we're headed of course jump right
11:43
into so then um Adam had an OP I had the
11:45
idea right after our conference that
11:47
maybe we could leverage the support of
11:49
our colleagues around us and have a
11:51
professional development day for our
11:52
entire community which grew into
11:53
something enormous where we had
11:56
educators from across the country and
11:58
from different continents involved in
12:00
professional development with our
12:01
faculty so I wanted Adam just to talk a
12:03
little bit about this tremendous
12:06
professional development opportunity
12:08
that happened this past Tuesday here in
12:09
a hosted by our district so on Friday at
12:12
the end of that superintendent
12:13
conference day we had experimented with
12:15
distance learning during the Friday
12:17
superintendent conference day we had
12:18
teachers report to their home schools
12:19
and then we had them participate in the
12:22
experiences the learning experiences
12:24
here at really that was on Friday and
12:26
that worked out really well we were very
12:27
successful with that so we had the
12:29
confidence to launch a regional
12:31
conference on Tuesday on which we called
12:34
Basecamp
12:35
online you might remember we ran a base
12:36
camp last year in June where we invited
12:39
regional as an actual face-to-face
12:40
conference we invited folks from the
12:42
regions region this base camp online we
12:45
decided to see if we could support a
12:48
virtual conference
12:49
the way this basically worked was we
12:51
created a table and we created a logo
12:53
this picture of me down on the left side
12:55
is actually after the Friday afternoon
12:57
board meeting that we had I created a
12:59
logo there you can see it's actually a
13:00
prototype of a logo because it didn't
13:01
end up looking quite like that but we
13:03
ended up launching that logo out onto
13:05
social media and we created a table
13:07
where we asked professionals from the
13:09
region to share their talents and put in
13:11
sessions you can see just a piece of the
13:13
the table here we ended up with nearly
13:16
50 different sessions facilitated by
13:20
close to a hundred different
13:21
facilitators and we had to shut down our
13:23
enrollment when we hit we were nearing a
13:25
thousand and we were worried that we
13:27
wouldn't have the capacity with the
13:28
various sessions to be able to support
13:30
more than a thousand so we actually
13:31
turned off enrollment earlier than we
13:33
had thought and we contacted a few
13:34
authors who volunteered to do mini
13:37
keynote sessions in the beginning so
13:38
this whole conference really had no cost
13:41
to us or anyone it was all free all
13:43
volunteer presenters the author's
13:44
volunteered their time and we had a
13:46
really powerful day where participants
13:47
could jump in and out of these zoom
13:49
sessions it was all virtual online for
13:51
many of our teachers I was really the
13:53
first time other than the Friday this is
13:54
the second time that they got to
13:56
participate in some new experience so it
13:59
was really powerful we were excited we
14:00
trended on quite a few social media
14:02
platforms and got a lot of good
14:04
information people were feeling pretty
14:05
motivated and we had obviously quite a
14:07
few Chappaqua teachers and leaders
14:09
participate and also present okay so I'd
14:17
like Tony to talk a little bit about our
14:20
hiring and our recruitment so Tony who's
14:23
coming in virtually there you are I
14:27
thank you so much Christine yeah so on
14:29
February 29th we are team from chapel
14:32
here participated in a diversity
14:34
recruitment fair that was organized by
14:35
our regional team of HR directors and
14:40
assistant superintendents in the area
14:41
everyone from Scarsdale to Clarkstown to
14:43
occitane and we had the opportunity to
14:47
go through over 2,000 resumes for a
14:51
abundance of positions and we narrowed
14:53
it down to about 40 candidates that we
14:55
wanted to screen for various positions
14:56
which is why you see the team there we
14:58
had representatives from the elementary
14:59
middle school and high school and we
15:01
were screening for everything from
15:03
assistant principals to science teachers
15:05
to music teachers so it was a really
15:07
really interesting day and the focus of
15:09
the fair was trying to get diverse pool
15:13
of candidates from underrepresented
15:14
groups so it was great to see that
15:15
cross-section of the community
15:17
represented there it was a really
15:18
positive experience and I think our team
15:20
for coming out on a Saturday and
15:22
spending hours there conducting
15:23
interviews and screening interviews it
15:25
was a really great day thank you Tony
15:28
and then I just wanted to highlight a
15:30
few events that took place right before
15:33
we wound up having to go out on and
15:37
engage in virtual learning so we had a
15:38
great senior musical we had an excellent
15:41
Bell production of The Sound of Music
15:44
and then I want to congratulate our boys
15:46
basketball team they won the section at
15:48
the County Center in front of many of us
15:50
and it was really exciting we're very
15:52
happy for them they actually won their
15:54
xk2 in newburgh where they had to play
15:58
with them when they present and then at
16:02
that point because of the coronavirus
16:05
they had canceled the remainder of the
16:06
tournament so i didn't want to take a
16:08
moment and recognize them and their
16:10
efforts this season and I'm sure the
16:14
boys were very disappointed it couldn't
16:17
continue on and go to Binghamton but we
16:18
are very proud of it they had great
16:20
moments and particularly that many of
16:26
our fans through these bison got to see
16:31
how then game in it for them so I mean
16:34
it was tremendous ease and I do want to
16:35
I want to congratulate them on their own
16:37
on their successes before we go into the
16:41
budget presentation tonight and Adam
16:44
will lead that the in curriculum and
16:46
instruction special education and
16:48
Technology budget presentations with
16:50
Josh Joaquin Christie Evers I did want
16:52
to mention that morning tomorrow morning
16:54
he's going to receive two notices from
16:57
me the first or that I know that some of
17:00
our students are feeling like they
17:02
didn't take everything they needed to
17:04
take when they left the buildings last
17:06
week so we will have a structured
17:09
opportunity case particularly became
17:13
great go to school parents get whatever
17:16
belonging
17:17
they feel like they need to take out of
17:18
the building on Friday from 8:00 to
17:21
10:00 but that would be the last time we
17:23
will open up our buildings to students
17:26
to families and to our faculty ka in
17:31
order to review any other items so that
17:32
will be going out tomorrow morning
17:34
and the other information that I want to
17:36
share with you that will be going out
17:38
tomorrow is that we will be closing our
17:39
facilities to the community you know
17:43
social distancing is a is a major part
17:46
of making sure that we're all doing our

17:48
part to prevent the spread of the corona
17:51
virus and we are too many people on our
17:54
property close proximity of each other
17:57
and that we feel like we need to take
17:59
this step to make sure that we have
18:01
groups of people not congregating on our
18:05
property so we will be sending out that
18:07
notices tomorrow I'm again it's painful
18:09
to have to take steps like this response
18:12
to the run of iris but I think it's
18:15
important that we do so and we will have
18:18
particularly it really someone in the
18:20
front monomer make sure that we don't
18:21
have people coming onto our property to
18:25
use the fields or the track from dusk to
18:28
dawn dawn so I do thank everyone for
18:30
their cooperation as we all do our part
18:33
here to try to be safe and healthy in
18:36
this current climate and environment if
18:39
anyone has any questions we'd like to
18:40
talk to me about that they can certainly
18:42
email me and I will call them I'll call
18:45
them as soon as I I get their message so
18:49
thank you all right so now we're going
18:51
to unquestionable the presentation
18:57
that's fire yeah I didn't hear that I
19:02
just wanted to ask one question probably
19:06
to Adam actually if that's okay yeah um
19:09
could you speak a little bit one thing
19:12
that I've been getting questions at
19:14
asked actually sort of as you're
19:16
presenting is whether or to what extent
19:20
the distance learning will incorporate
19:22
anything like what we're doing right now
19:25
where the students are able to actually
19:27
interact sort of as a class or whether
19:30
it's going to
19:30
albey it seems that the communications
19:32
we've gotten thus far have really been
19:34
you're gonna complete these assignments
19:36
and turn them in that will be related it
19:38
to you but I think parents are hopeful
19:41
that if it can be incorporated into the
19:44
distance learning there could be
19:45
something to make this socialite
19:47
civilization a little less isolating for
19:52
the kids yeah thank you for the question
19:54
it's a it's a good question as we work
19:56
with the with the teachers on developing
19:59
the plan that we have and we provide a
20:01
professional development we've really
20:03
made a strong push so as many people
20:05
felt comfortable as many of our teachers
20:07
felt comfortable and leaders feel
20:08
comfortable using zoom as we could and
20:10
that was a big reason that we used to
20:12
zoom so extensively on the Friday for
20:15
superintendent conference day so all of
20:16
the teachers that don't typically report
20:18
to Grilli participated through zoom and
20:20
we offered quite a few professional
20:22
development sessions on zoom so I think
20:23
we've built a level of proficiency where
20:26
many many teachers are feeling
20:28
comfortable using zoom we we wanted to
20:30
be sensitive to this idea of pretty
20:32
complicated personal lives and family
20:35
structures and outside of school
20:37
environments and so we didn't we felt
20:38
like we needed to stop short of saying
20:40
that there was an expectation that you
20:42
would do synchronous learning with kids
20:43
for a variety of reasons right so that
20:46
is definitely an option we hope that
20:48
teachers will explore it I know there
20:50
are many teachers that are excited about
20:51
exploring it I think in the beginning
20:53
because this is so new for us that
20:55
teachers will probably we've even
20:56
recommended that they take a safe route
20:59
with delivering kind of a packaged
21:00
lesson that will arrive in the morning
21:02
by 8:30 for our kids but my hope is that
21:04
we start to open up zoom as at first to
21:07
small conferencing tool perhaps to a
21:08
conference with an individual student or
21:10
a small group of students and then
21:11
perhaps try it with larger groups so I
21:13
think that you will see even within the
21:15
first couple of days some teachers
21:16
experiment with it and then that will
21:17
certainly open up will continue to
21:19
provide professional development around
21:20
that um we know it's really important to
21:23
maintain that relationship you know kid
21:25
kids learn from people that they like
21:26
and people that they're connected to and
21:28
so we're gonna continue to do our best
21:30
and have connections professional
21:33
appropriate personal connections with
21:35
our with our faculty and with our
21:36
leaders and so I think that you will see
21:39
that as part of our as part of our
21:40
learning plan thank you
21:45
can I also I I I was also thinking this
21:49
idea that we're gonna we're to be
21:50
regularly asking for feedback from
21:52
students and from parents and obviously
21:54
their teachers so if that's something
21:56
that you're feeling like you would like
21:58
to see more of you're gonna have lots of
21:59
opportunities as well to give back just
22:03
to provide a little bit more structure
22:06
around that by next Wednesday each
22:08
principle should be eat it either
22:09
meeting with a group of students or
22:11
parents virtually to provide feedback to
22:14
the district administrative team of how
22:16
distance learning is going so and we
22:19
really are making a commitment we know
22:21
this is new for everybody right so we're
22:23
really gonna make a commitment to be in
22:25
touch with the people who are on the
22:27
receiving not just the people that are
22:29
on the the giving end to make sure that
22:31
we're meeting both both the needs of
22:33
both our instructors and our students so
22:36
well and we'll continue to update you as
22:38
we as we move forward instructing our
22:41
kids in this way
22:45
okay so Adams gonna do some screen stuff
22:48
to get the presentation up that we're
22:50
working on off of tonight so tonight
22:54
we're going to be doing our budget
22:56
proposal for are going through our
22:58
budget proposal for curriculum and
23:00
instruction which I will lead special
23:02
education and Technology so those are
23:05
going to be the three and I'm joined by
23:06
Christie Evers who's our new director of
23:08
special education not new to the direct
23:10
not new to the district but new to that
23:12
position and then our director of math
23:15
innovation and technology as Josh Bloch
23:18
so I'll introduce them for their
23:19
sections in just a moment I'm going to
23:22
to see if I can't move pretty quickly
23:26
through these first couple of slides
23:27
because I know they are familiar to the
23:29
board you've seen these before and and
23:30
some of them are even pieces that you
23:32
have developed for the district I
23:34
thought it was important to acknowledge
23:35
that you we continue to build the budget
23:39
based around these strategic questions
23:40
which are the board's strategic
23:41
questions that we have used over the
23:44
last couple of years and so these remain
23:45
guiding principles of budget development
23:49
this you've also seen for teaching and
23:52
learning on the left side you see active
23:53
active student learning and you see
23:55
important words like engaged meaningful
23:57
inquiry imagination invention
23:58
interaction hypothesizing and reflection
24:00
and on the right strong student
24:02
collaboration we've gone gone as far as
24:04
you know as to to build spaces to help
24:06
us ensure that students and teachers are
24:08
working together in collaborative in
24:09
collaborative groups creating a product
24:11
arriving at a solution using the Design
24:13
Thinking model and so we ground a lot of
24:15
our budget development in those things
24:17
and we continue to use the district
24:19
strategic priorities that were developed
24:21
and there are six altogether profile
24:23
skill and profile of greeley graduate
24:25
district-wide assessment practices
24:27
social-emotional learning
24:28
academic program alignment which is
24:30
about curriculum alignment instructional
24:32
space to amplify learning and technology
24:34
to personalize learning and that
24:35
technology initiative that has been
24:37
going on for any years with a lot of
24:39
support from the Board of Education and
24:41
many others is is about to pay dividends
24:44
it is right now as we stream this
24:45
meeting curriculum and instruction is
24:48
really about two major things the first
24:50
one is to support powerful and
24:51
innovative teaching and learning hiring
24:54
professional development and then the
24:55
second one is about rigor
24:57
instruction based on powerful and
25:00
relevant engaging curriculum so I just
25:05
wanted to update the board of education
25:06
on a several of our curriculum
25:09
articulation initiatives that's one of
25:11
our priorities the list is fairly long
25:14
here but as you know we have a new k1
25:16
phonics program so we were working on
25:18
implementing that this year trained all
25:20
the teachers over the summer and we're
25:21
going to be rolling that into second
25:23
grade next year so we'll be training all
25:24
of the second-grade teachers this summer
25:26
and early fall for implementation next
25:28
year we've worked on the fidelity to the
25:30
T 60 units of study in k4 I've been
25:33
working with our 5th through 8th grade
25:34
English teachers on the transition to
25:36
the workshop model and having more
25:38
coherence across the grade levels and
25:40
the buildings and we've been working on
25:42
a review of our k-8 math program math
25:44
and focus and Big Ideas k12 health k12
25:48
digital literacy that's about what
25:50
technology skills we want students to
25:51
acquire as they move through the grades
25:53
next generation science standards we're
25:56
mapping them sixth grade through 12th
25:58
grade and then you can see 5th grade
25:59
through 12th grade are the social
26:01
studies framework alignment the reason
26:03
that the science standards are 6 through
26:05
12 is because we actually use a an
26:07
outside developed curriculum for k5 with
26:11
the next generation science standards I
26:13
still wanted to talk a little bit about
26:15
professional learning we touched on it
26:16
earlier with dr. Ackerman's presentation
26:19
and we continue to use the same
26:20
professional learning structures they're
26:22
they're numerous we do professional
26:24
development and faculty meetings
26:25
Superintendent Conference days in
26:26
service courses which are run by our
26:29
professional development team they're
26:30
also run by teachers for other teachers
26:33
in some cases and we have learning teams
26:35
which are things like book clubs and
26:36
book studies our appr inquiry projects
26:40
that our teachers engage in every year a
26:42
new teacher mentor programs a new
26:44
teacher orientation we do classroom
26:45
coaching with our professional
26:46
development team and we have consultants
26:48
come in have authors come in obviously
26:50
have a fellowship program use committees
26:53
for professional development and then we
26:54
do quite a bit of summer professional
26:56
development and curriculum planning as
26:57
well and we've got several initiatives
27:01
when it comes to professional
27:02
development and I'm not going to read
27:04
down the list most of these you know
27:06
because I present them to the board in
27:08
the past year on the rollout of maps
27:10
phonics first appr revisions where we
27:13
instituted rubric ruler implementation
27:16
etc so I wanted to share with you the
27:22
the speakers that we've brought in this
27:24
year there we do have some of our budget
27:27
is allocated towards bringing in experts
27:29
really national experts renowned experts
27:32
to help us really kind of think
27:34
differently and push our thinking and I
27:36
want to when I also thank the PT PTA for
27:39
their involvement and all these speakers
27:41
they helped fund several of them and in
27:44
some cases split the cost with us so we
27:45
appreciate that we have these four lined
27:47
up unfortunately now we have to do some
27:49
thinking about perhaps putting them
27:51
delaying them and doing them another
27:53
time but we also this year we had Robert
27:54
Dylan the author of the space gorge
27:56
kurios and our Marc Brackett who is the
28:00
ruler expert from Yale Tony do you wanna
28:05
I'm gonna if you want to jump in chuckle
28:07
just for a minute about leadership
28:08
development absolutely thank you Adam
28:10
yeah Adam has been talking a lot about
28:12
our uncle and professional learning and
28:14
then excited to share that our
28:15
leadership team has been actively
28:16
engaged a lot of professional learning
28:18
to not only in the form of consulting
28:21
and partnering with the various authors
28:23
who have come in whether we were talking
28:25
about why middle school matters or
28:26
thinking about the book under pressure
28:27
or spending time with George gross we
28:30
had a lot of other PD time I'm excited
28:32
about in partnering with Christine Adam
28:34
and John is that only structure our
28:35
Administrative Council meetings which
28:37
happen once a month or the whole team
28:39
the focus is always on professional
28:41
learning you know whether we're thinking
28:42
about questioning or feedback to
28:43
teachers or thinking about
28:44
social-emotional learning our leadership
28:47
team is actively engaged in that
28:49
continued learning so it's been it's
28:50
been a great year Thank You Adam thank
28:54
you
29:02
all right so these slides we covered
29:04
with Christine's overview in the
29:06
introduction this transition to eye
29:08
learning that we're calling which is
29:10
going to kick off tomorrow and I told
29:11
you a little bit about base camp online
29:13
we have a regional base camp planned
29:16
already for June 30th so this is the
29:17
flyer that has already gone out and been
29:20
advertised this this is probably new for
29:24
the Board of Education this is our
29:25
summer theme we went with a Summer
29:28
Olympics theme and so you can see our
29:30
professional development that we've
29:32
planned through the course of the summer
29:33
we've already sent this out to our
29:35
faculty so they can save the dates we
29:36
try to get a little creative with our
29:39
with our naming conventions and we use
29:40
the logos or the little symbols from the
29:43
Olympics and you can obviously see the
29:44
rings there so we're just having a
29:45
little bit of fun with this Summer Games
29:48
2020 professional development around
29:51
these various areas we still have the
29:55
our fellowships moving forward we are
29:56
going to be launching two new
29:58
fellowships Tony is leading one the
30:00
equity fellows and then we have a new
30:02
shell fellowship called shift 21 shaping
30:04
the future of teaching in the 21st
30:06
century so those two are coming online
30:08
the others are going to continue so the
30:11
social emotional learning fellowship
30:12
that dr. Ackerman
30:13
runs as well as the Wilson fellowship
30:16
that we have to make sure that our
30:18
teachers are trained in Wilson and our
30:20
graduate positioning system Fellowship
30:22
which is GPS and that's all about
30:24
curriculum creative curriculum design
30:25
and articulation
30:31
though as we as we move in transition
30:34
into the budget components that make up
30:37
the curriculum and instruction budget I
30:40
wanted to touch on the instructional
30:42
positions that we have in this year's
30:44
budget the first one is an additional an
30:46
addition of a High School assistant
30:48
principal so this would add a fourth
30:50
assistant principal and this is this is
30:52
really about our bill ability to support
30:55
not only a really complex high school
30:57
but also students with diverse needs in
30:59
that high school and so it really comes
31:01
down to the team that we had now is an
31:03
excellent team they're a hard-working
31:04
team and what we feel like by adding
31:06
that extra assistant principal that we
31:08
really will have the ability to support
31:09
students and connect with our counseling
31:12
team and our faculty in a different way
31:14
and to give them an opportunity to lean
31:16
into being instructional leaders even
31:17
more so than they can right now so we'll
31:19
see I'm an increase in their ability to
31:21
get into classrooms and work with
31:22
teachers and also an increase in their
31:24
ability to connect with parents and
31:25
support students so that's a
31:26
recommendation that we increase one High
31:29
School assistant principal the second
31:31
piece that you see here this to middle
31:33
school steam enrichment support teachers
31:35
we actually added one of those teachers
31:37
last year but it was after the budget
31:39
you may remember we had a we had a
31:41
volunteer from the community graciously
31:43
donating time to support students in one
31:46
of our middle schools in math as we
31:49
transitioned out of that model we added
31:51
a position for this year but that was
31:53
not included in last year's budget
31:54
because that decision was made after the
31:56
budget cycle so we already have one of
31:58
those positions our recommendation this
32:00
year is to add an additional teacher you
32:02
have one of those teachers positioned in
32:03
each of our middle schools and that
32:05
teacher provides enrichment support
32:07
mainly focused on steam and working in
32:10
the steam Center but a big piece of that
32:12
is also math enrichment and then there's
32:14
a remediation support through those
32:16
teachers as well so they can support
32:18
students that might need some extra
32:19
small group support in math Apple seven
32:22
bridges and Bell the three psychologists
32:25
we're going to touch on in just a minute
32:26
when we transition to the special
32:27
education presentation but you may
32:29
remember our recommendation to
32:30
restructure that department from a
32:32
previous meeting and then that last line
32:34
the PE an assistant ad that that has
32:36
also been added we have already hired
32:38
that person they're working here in the
32:39
districts working very well with that
32:41
restructure of Athletics but that
32:43
decision again was made after last
32:45
year's
32:45
budget so this just puts holds that
32:47
position into the actual budget for this
32:50
next year so let me go through some of
32:54
the numbers for the curriculum and
32:55
instruction budget and I want to just
32:57
touch on a few that few that had that
33:02
have changed and moved the first one is
33:04
contractual curriculum studies the the
33:07
bump there is really due to two
33:09
different things I'm talking about this
33:10
from the 20 thousands of the 60,000 the
33:13
additional 40,000 um is going to pay for
33:15
phonics first and also potentially a
33:18
handwriting program that we have been
33:20
working with our primary teachers on
33:23
handwriting and we think we need to do
33:25
take a good look at handwriting some
33:27
handwriting program so we're gonna do
33:28
some work at the end of this year and
33:29
the beginning of next year on
33:30
handwriting programs and we want to make
33:32
sure that we have some money budgeted
33:33
for that
33:33
that's second $40,000 that you see there
33:36
is just the total of the line so that's
33:38
that's just an addition an additional
33:40
forty thousand not an additional 80
33:41
thousand for that slide I think I just
34:04
clicked twice and I think I skipped a
34:06
slide here in just a minute so let me I
34:12
was on my wrong page of my notes I mean
34:14
we tracked that forty there's an
34:16
additional forty thousand on the next
34:17
page but I mixed up my forty thousand
34:19
dis I'm testing line that says testing
34:22
forty thousand is for nwea that's the
34:24
Maps screener so that's that forty
34:26
thousand you'll see why I confused it
34:28
because on the top of the next page
34:29
there's also a forty thousand as well
34:31
this nine thousand dollars for equipment
34:34
is because we're going to be opening up
34:36
the Steam Center and we wanted to make
34:37
sure that we had some funding there
34:40
available in case we needed to roll some
34:41
equipment in that was unanticipated and
34:43
it also is going to help us with El
34:45
building we've realized that we need a
34:47
couple things like some rolling book
34:48
carts and bookcases and things like that
34:50
so we put we increase that equipment and
34:52
find just a little bit this next line is
34:55
an increase for traveling conferences
34:57
and we have some
34:58
new curriculum rolling in so in science
35:01
standards next generation social studies
35:03
standards we want to make sure that we
35:04
have the funds available so we can send
35:06
teachers to some conferences so they can
35:08
make sure they're prepared to write and
35:10
roll out that new curriculum and that
35:12
increase of $3,000 is for phonics
35:17
reproduction services we need to
35:19
reproduce some things for the phonics
35:20
first program alright so that's the the
35:27
other 40,000 that I was talking about
35:28
the contractual curriculum studies that
35:30
40,000 is for the phonic to purchase the
35:32
phonics first program and materials and
35:34
also for the handwriting that I
35:35
mentioned just a few minutes ago you'll
35:38
see a pretty significant increase in
35:40
textbooks and curriculum development
35:42
down here in the bottom you'll see an
35:44
increase of eighty thousand dollars and
35:46
that's for several things one of them is
35:48
we need to look at our middle school
35:49
social studies textbooks that we're
35:51
using or to see if we can find some
35:53
resources that would be good for the
35:55
teachers to use in middle school social
35:56
studies and we also want to update our
35:58
classroom many of our classroom
35:59
libraries we want to build out some
36:01
middle school classroom libraries so you
36:03
see that that 80,000 there we're also
36:05
doing some thinking about our math
36:07
program like I mentioned before as we
36:09
evaluate big ideas so we wanted to have
36:12
the funds for those initiatives and then
36:15
you'll see that this is just the summary
36:17
of the previous slides with the total
36:19
they're on the bottom all right so we're
36:24
gonna transition to the proposed
36:27
technology budget hi everybody
36:30
so I'm gonna review our proposed
36:33
technology budget I'll just give out on
36:35
my thumbs up every time to switch those
36:38
slide to the next this is the department
36:41
vision statement you've seen this before
36:43
the only addition that we have here now
36:45
is that I'm working towards becoming at
36:48
law 2d compliance or our policies need
36:52
to shift and some work that we need to
36:53
do needs to shift in terms of privacy
36:56
and cybersecurity as we've talked about
37:02
before the technology budget has lots of
37:06
different components of it but the
37:07
center that we believe in Chappaqua have
37:09
a technology budget is the innovative
37:11
teaching and learning
37:13
so we'll go on to the next slide to talk
37:15
about the budget itself the Chappaqua
37:19
school district has made a significant
37:20
investment in our technology department
37:25
this is really what has enabled us to
37:28
shift on a dime to our complete online
37:32
instruction mode over the past three
37:34
years the work that has been done has
37:37
made it really really easy to start to
37:42
make the shifts all of the professional
37:44
development we've done all of the
37:45
investment in our one to one computing
37:48
all of the work that we've done has made
37:50
this shift really helped us become this
37:52
national leader in online learning as we
37:54
start the soft launch tomorrow we'll
37:59
first start talked about the data
38:01
component of the budget one of the big
38:04
pieces of our budget is this mandate to
38:07
become at law 2d compliance there are
38:11
nine components in a previous board
38:13
meeting I talked about that component
38:15
Adams gonna go to that there you go so
38:19
by July 1st 2020 we have to adopt our
38:24
policies and begin the road to full
38:30
compliance to at law 2d and there the
38:35
nine components that we've talked about
38:36
in the past talking about all of the
38:39
protection of our students and our
38:41
information and our data systems through
38:43
there and also thinking about our
38:47
contracts and our incident reporting we
38:50
are well on our way to implementing or
38:54
and/or coming up with a plan of
38:56
implementing all of the pieces so that
38:58
on July 1st we could start running and
39:00
saying hey we've got everything in place
39:02
and we're ready to go for at law 2d
39:04
compliance we this work isn't done in
39:09
partnership and a lot of the
39:11
cybersecurity work we were doing is on
39:14
our roadmap this law just really upped a
39:18
lot of the pieces and these are the
39:21
partners that we've been working with to
39:23
begin cybersecurity
39:26
IVA see getting policies in place doing
39:28
training and all these pieces one of the
39:31
pieces that I'm really actually excited
39:33
about is class link this is a platform
39:36
that puts all of our systems into one
39:39
big hub and then starts to anonymize the
39:42
data so that the data we send to lots of
39:45
our partners they don't see our student
39:48
information they get it what's really
39:50
going to be cool is that it's going to
39:53
create one big online portal for every
39:56
parent to log on to and every student to
39:58
log on to for every single app so no
40:01
more where do I go to get this
40:03
information where do I go to do this so
40:05
you just get one class link app that has
40:07
everything in there in one piece of it
40:09
it's also gonna do a lot of tracking of
40:12
all of the software and hardware that we
40:15
purchase so we could start making some
40:17
better data based decisions about our
40:19
instructional software or instructional
40:20
hardware um as we know right a large
40:26
part of the work that we're doing is
40:28
creating some incredible spaces and
40:31
creating leveraging technology to
40:34
facilitate learning we've seen our
40:38
digital learning goals so these are
40:40
still the same and they really guide
40:42
everything that we do in digital
40:43
learning and you can actually can think
40:45
about this as our guiding light through
40:47
the next few months or the next few
40:50
weeks in terms of in terms of online
40:53
learning and as we shift back into our
40:55
environments this is really what's going
40:57
to drive the work and drive the
40:58
professional development that we do our
41:01
one-to-one rollout this year we have
41:03
implemented in the in two through twelve
41:08
all have access to devices we just got
41:13
our approval from the state for our
41:16
smart bond money last week and can
41:18
remember me presenting the back way back
41:20
last year it took them about 18 months
41:22
to get that information to us I'm gonna
41:24
prove that but we are capable of
41:27
ordering iPads for kn1 so that by when
41:31
we receive them whenever that is we will
41:33
be K through 12 we will have every
41:36
student will have access to a device
41:39
at all times and we can start really
41:42
make thoughtful decisions about when we
41:44
use it the devices how we use them for
41:46
active learning and which is really
41:48
really exciting we've learned a lot from
41:53
our one-to-one initiative and our launch
41:56
and really what it is is a professional
42:00
development has been key to getting
42:02
teachers to think about what active
42:04
engagement with devices is so we've
42:06
really built this system and built this
42:09
built this program the teachers use
42:12
digital tools as creation tools and as
42:16
learning tools and we try to make them
42:18
so that they're not consumption tools
42:20
and the data that when the feedback
42:22
we've received back from both teachers
42:24
and students is that we've really made
42:26
this unique program in Chappaqua our
42:30
steam spaces are all up and running
42:31
we've see students in the middle school
42:35
creating some incredible things a couple
42:38
weeks ago I saw a group creating these
42:41
statues as part of a civics project so
42:45
we're starting to see lots of use there
42:46
and our maker spaces and we're really
42:48
excited about the steam building of the
42:50
high school next year and then our
42:54
active learning spaces you could see
42:57
here
42:57
students and teachers all gathering in
43:00
lots of different ways and lots of
43:02
different places and learning in ways
43:03
that we never thought imagined the
43:07
spaces have really changed the level and
43:10
up the level of instruction in the
43:11
chapel across school district one of the
43:15
things that we had discussed is parts of
43:18
the technology budget that have been
43:21
used for the space in 2019 2020 we have
43:25
spent money from our budget I would say
43:29
it was 50 to 60 thousand dollars between
43:32
supplies and equipment however a lot of
43:36
this stuff would have happened
43:37
regardless of our spaces they're all
43:39
part of our active learning program and
43:41
our steam program so we do our startup
43:46
supplies came out of the technology
43:48
budget and the steam budget so a bunch
43:51
of different things came out of there
43:52
but
43:53
they're really commingled into the full
43:55
instructional product product that we
43:57
have so so that's all part of the work
44:00
as we start to craft the budget and
44:02
thinking about space and all space
44:04
throughout the school district next year
44:08
as we prepare for the new spaces their
44:12
technology budget we have a lease that's
44:15
on the proposed budget to purchase steam
44:19
equipment and AV equipment for the steam
44:23
building and for lower L for the next
44:25
spaces and we also have a portion a part
44:29
of our budget for some of that equipment
44:31
as well and the startup supplies for the
44:35
steam building agree Lea so we're
44:37
starting to prepare for those next
44:38
spaces to come online you could see here
44:43
our inventory as we have become a much
44:47
more mobile environment you see
44:50
increases in mobile mobile devices and
44:54
decreases in things like desktop PCs
44:57
servers printers the servers as we move
45:01
to more cloud-based computing we see a
45:03
decrease in the number of servers that
45:05
we have on premises as well and as we go
45:08
to more digital learning we see a lot
45:10
less printing so we see a decrease in
45:11
the number of printers that we have here
45:16
is our projection as we go out and you
45:19
could start to see it really plateaus as
45:23
of next school year because well every
45:26
single person has access to a device and
45:28
takes it with them and they're mobile
45:30
with it we actually probably will see a
45:32
decrease of some of these devices as our
45:34
enrollment shifts but right now these is
45:38
work we're projecting um if you add up
45:40
these numbers it does over it is over
45:44
the amount of people that we have in our
45:46
school and none of students and faculty
45:47
we have that's because we have some
45:49
highly specialized carts for engineering
45:52
and for steam and for art so those
45:55
devices would would give us a little bit
45:58
over the number of students and faculty
46:00
and staff that we have in the school
46:01
district here you could see our leases
46:05
our
46:07
years leases is a refresh the 80,000 is
46:10
a refresh of the of our some of our
46:14
laptops and actually some of our
46:16
desktops that are over 10 years old and
46:18
then also the additional $200,000
46:21
proposed leased for the equipment in the
46:26
steam building that we have and then
46:31
here you can see a breakdown of the
46:33
changes in the technology budget and you
46:36
can see here it really all is about
46:39
active learning cyber security data
46:43
protection and our on our new space
46:46
construction that's really it we see
46:48
some decreases as we go to cloud
46:51
computing and I do think over the next
46:53
few years our budget will go down in
46:58
lots of areas as we go to more cloud
46:59
computing spaces great ok next slide
47:09
here I just want to pause before we move
47:15
and before we move into the next
47:19
presentation so we are so grateful that
47:23
this community has invested in
47:25
technology and the Board of Education
47:27
has supported our one-to-one initiatives
47:30
we are well-positioned to support our
47:32
students through our professional
47:33
development and our equipment for
47:35
distance learning and many of my
47:38
colleagues are not in the same position
47:39
of us as us so I just want to pause for
47:41
a second and express my gratitude for
47:45
the way that Josh and Adam and the
47:48
entire technology department has
47:49
supported our faculty and how we've been
47:52
able to leverage the support of our
47:53
foundation to be in a good position to
47:56
launch i learning tomorrow because of
47:59
the investment that we've made across
48:00
this district and instructional
48:02
technology so i just want to acknowledge
48:04
that and I want to thank that I thank
48:08
Josh and everyone else who's been a part
48:10
of transforming the way that we deliver
48:13
education to our students so all right
48:16
we can move on to the next presentation
48:20
so I first want to start off I think for
48:22
my first budget presentation this will
48:24
be one that I really will never forget
48:30
thank everyone also for working with me
48:34
as we move forward for my for my first
48:36
presentation it's been a long-standing
48:42
commitment to inclusion which of course
48:46
goes along with I DEA but it also lends
48:49
itself directly into developing the
48:51
skills and attributes of what we
48:53
determine a Greeley grad needs to have
48:56
before they exit our district our
49:00
priorities we've really have focused in
49:02
a lot on this from the 2018 2020 school
49:05
year when we had our try States visit
49:08
come we had were all very very much
49:10
involved in that process and had really
49:13
listened to their recommendations and
49:15
had moved forward and implemented them
49:18
we've really took a look at developing a
49:22
shared language K through 12 this
49:24
provide more clarity among staff and
49:26
also for parents and even students at
49:29
times we clarified with roles and
49:32
expectations for teachers and service
49:34
service providers we began professional
49:37
development actually in the summer of
49:38
2019 even starting with our collab
49:42
Academy which so many people were
49:44
involved in to really talk and start to
49:47
move forward about our inclusionary
49:48
practices and then also with the support
49:52
of two of Adam as well as there is
49:54
analysis of different assessments and
49:56
tools to support the screening process
49:58
that we had put into place Adam this was
50:03
you how's that good all right so we
50:13
continue with a couple of different
50:14
initiatives that we have a little
50:16
overlap between curriculum Shannon and
50:18
dr. Ackerman's office and myself one of
50:20
them is the rollout of ruler in all of
50:22
our schools and high school we've
50:24
implemented ruler we're rolling out the
50:27
lessons now so all of the Greely
50:29
students have had several experiences
50:30
with ruler lessons which is part of our
50:33
social emotional
50:34
learning curriculum bell and seven
50:36
bridges here in year two and then
50:37
elementary schools in year one so that
50:40
rollout is well underway and we also
50:42
continue our continue our push to make
50:44
sure that we have ample number of
50:46
educators certified in Wilson reading
50:48
and so we have a Wilson reading
50:49
fellowship that I mentioned before we
50:51
have a second cohort moving into that
50:52
fellowship and to make sure that we have
50:54
the staff with the skills required to
50:56
make sure that we can meet the needs of
50:57
all students great can you hear me the
51:03
transition has been a continued focus
51:05
for us and we have even have built
51:11
further our job development and our job
51:13
coaching we currently contract with an
51:16
agency to really help support our
51:18
students out in the Chappaqua community
51:20
we've had many communities in Chappaqua
51:22
who have been very open and willing to
51:24
support our students so which has been
51:27
really really nice to see and community
51:29
members have been going in and out and
51:31
have yet to see our students and also
51:33
have been reaching out to the parents
51:34
just been really nice that will be a
51:36
continued focus one area which we have
51:40
also heard feedback on is the way in
51:43
which we contract with our transition
51:46
coordinator and that is going to be
51:48
something that we will be continuing to
51:50
look at as we move forward particularly
51:52
focusing in on our students who may not
51:55
have a traditional post-secondary path
51:57
those types of supports are definitely
52:00
ones that we were have focused in on a
52:03
lot but also through the feedback from
52:05
parents and our teachers we need to
52:09
continue to really look at that to
52:10
ensuring that we're providing the most
52:12
support as possible for post-secondary
52:14
planning parent participation oh that's
52:19
okay for the parent participation
52:21
component McCarthy actually developed an
52:25
advisory committee and when we were in
52:27
session we really were meeting bimonthly
52:29
and our special education PTA social
52:32
inclusion for unified sports and the
52:35
section 504 chair responsibilities had
52:37
shifted currently we now have a one
52:41
chair person for grades 5 through 12
52:43
chairing our 504 meetings
52:45
there was also a comprehensive K through
52:48
12 counseling review so this is just a
52:55
reminder of the reorganization that was
52:57
recommended by dr. Ackerman of special
53:00
education and so our plan is to add you
53:03
saw these ads in my presentation the
53:06
three CSE chair people that will all be
53:08
will all be psychologists and then we
53:10
have Christy as a director of special
53:12
education and we hope to wrap wrap up
53:15
our search for the assistant
53:16
superintendent for PPS sometime soon so
53:18
this is just a reminder of where those
53:21
three positions fit into the larger
53:23
picture of the organizational structure
53:25
and the redesign of special education
53:29
far as net for our next steps we've
53:32
really have started focusing in on them
53:34
that's where you see our tech marks
53:36
already we've instituted an educational
53:39
testing protocol retention procedures
53:42
this is to ensure that were compliance
53:44
legal requirements we did this in
53:46
collaboration with Adam in our building
53:48
principals so all have heard and have a
53:51
process in place professional
53:53
development on the administration and
53:55
the Woodcock Johnson
53:57
just took place on March 13th with dr.
54:00
John birudo I was actually a part of
54:02
that and I have to say it was one of the
54:05
most engaging administration of any
54:09
educational evaluation that I've ever
54:11
participated in we had amazing feedback
54:13
from all members including dr. Gerudo
54:17
himself as we have shared before as part
54:21
of our reorganization but also in
54:23
starting in the spring of 2020 all of
54:25
our CSC chairs will either be
54:27
administrators or psychologists and then
54:30
implemented also was a review of the
54:33
teacher educational testing by
54:34
psychologists and that's also to ensure
54:36
another set of eyes on our educational
54:39
evaluations as we move forward as we
54:42
move forward there were also the
54:43
internal spot checks that the teacher
54:45
educational evaluations and this is to
54:48
ensure appropriate administration and
54:50
scoring
54:55
so you may remember not long ago I
54:59
presented to the board recomment record
55:02
doctor McGuffy came and presented her
55:03
recommendations and then I presented
55:06
kind of the district's response to those
55:08
recommendations and this is a reminder
55:09
of those recommendations that I had made
55:12
the first is to move forward with an RFP
55:15
for a comprehensive review and we are
55:17
fairly far along in that process we had
55:19
one drafted currently second one is the
55:22
assistant superintendent who is going
55:24
through we're working through a process
55:25
to hire that person now go through that
55:27
comprehensive review work on a strategic
55:29
plan or the development of a strategic
55:32
plan will include all of our
55:33
stakeholders in that development of that
55:35
plan so that way that new assistant
55:37
superintendent as a really classic clear
55:39
path forward to work with Christie Evers
55:41
and st and then we hope to report back
55:44
to the Board of Education on how that's
55:46
all moving forward so you see I'm just
55:52
moving us for a second sorry
55:54
so you'll see a chart really from 2017
55:59
to current this is information that was
56:02
taken on beds day so it's important to
56:04
recognize that the information that's
56:06
being compared is truly comparing apples
56:08
to apples of course these numbers change
56:10
as the year progresses but this
56:14
information usually best day I think is
56:16
the first Wednesday of the month in
56:18
October so this these numbers are based
56:22
upon our students that are in district
56:25
at this time so we're around 27.8% for
56:28
our rate for learning disability and
56:31
then our other health impairment those
56:33
are been questions in the past years
56:35
were around 30 so we had an increase in
56:38
their LD classification in that area so
56:46
this information is taken from the New
56:47
York State report card 2019 2020
56:50
information is not yet available that's
56:53
why it's not present however during or
56:56
2018-2019 Scalia our classification rate
56:59
was around nine point six this if there
57:02
is an approximate based upon our

57:05
information that we have with
57:07
our students with disabilities that
57:08
we're going to be around nine and a half
57:10
percent but again not set through the
57:13
New York State report card quite yet
57:20
okay
57:21
again this is information place that we
57:23
you take from bed-stuy this is for our a
57:26
total of our in district CSC students
57:31
and again that includes our our CSE
57:34
placed out of students in district is
57:36
three hundred eighteen out of district
57:38
twenty five you will see a decrease from
57:40
the third one to twenty five and that is
57:42
either students who have exit and or
57:45
students who are returning to district
57:47
we also have two students who are in
57:50
homebound instruction and that's just
57:52
given to the severity of their needs
57:57
when we take a look at our CSE placed at
58:01
a district programs it really runs in
58:03
the categories of BOCES which includes
58:04
Putnam Northern Westchester abilities
58:06
southern Westchester BOCES and or
58:08
Rockland Bossi's other public school
58:11
districts approved private date programs
58:13
and residential programs so again that
58:16
total number is compared to the other
58:18
two our slide that was before and there
58:21
is a decrease at this time of about five
58:23
students this information again
58:30
Chappaqua is usually always very very
58:32
high in this category as we also compare
58:36
to some of our other districts in the
58:38
sense of these are our students who are
58:40
in the general education classroom
58:41
eighty percent or more of the time so
58:44
around eighty seven point four again
58:46
very similar to private previous school
58:48
years similar districts are around as
58:52
you can see sixty two point six and then
58:54
the New York State component is fifty
58:56
eight point seven so again this goes
58:58
hand-in-hand with our inclusionary
59:00
practices that we have in place okay so
59:06
the main components to the budget
59:07
contractions are any contracted
59:11
employees to provide services such as
59:13
specialized instruction says nursing
59:17
services as examples our salaries
59:21
are really based upon the contract and
59:23
that's all of the CPS staff that's
59:25
included tuition for students in CSC a
59:28
district placements again that's usually
59:30
it has to be based on projections
59:32
because we don't have all of our CSE
59:34
meeting is completed by the time the
59:36
budget present you do the president's
59:38
budget presentation and also for
59:42
transportation I know that there were
59:46
some some questions in regards to this
59:48
so our bus routes are based on
59:50
efficiency clustering roots are not
59:53
delineated based upon classification of
59:57
special education students and/or
59:58
general education students
60:00
so there are times where our bus routes
60:02
are combined with CSE placed parentally
60:05
placed and general education students
60:07
and then also have our extended school
60:10
year program and again that is also
60:12
based on projections however that will
60:15
vary too but we try to you know as much
60:19
as possible but at the end of the day it
60:20
really will be based upon what our are
60:23
what is a result of our CSA meetings
60:28
okay so I know this chart is really
60:31
small and I know that you have a copy of
60:34
it but there are two lines that I do
60:37
want to draw your attention to and
60:39
excuse me well you're going to see my
60:40
face is zoom in a little bit but if you
60:43
look at our contractual student service
60:46
line and when you compare 2019-20 to
60:51
this current school year you'll see
60:52
again approximately there's a two
60:55
hundred thousand dollar increase in that
60:57
area and that was really due to our job
61:01
development and our job coaching and
61:04
also with our off-campus internships and
61:06
also nursing services for for our
61:09
students the other line that I want to
61:12
draw your attention to as well was our
61:17
tuition for both public for our public
61:20
tuition you're going to see a decrease
61:22
in that area and that is really based on
61:27
projections of other students who have
61:29
exited and/or returning to district
61:36
this age it's not all complete because
61:42
it's based upon the information that I
61:43
had however these are three additional
61:47
funding sources that we are able to
61:50
bring in money for so you have your Part
61:51
B grants your state aid and your
61:54
Medicaid reimbursements which is also
61:56
part of that so as soon as I have that
61:57
information made available I will share
62:00
that out but I didn't want to be remiss
62:02
and not include the information that we
62:05
have so that brings me to the end is
62:13
that Chris you hear me okay maybe we can
62:17
use the raise hand function on the
62:22
panelist side so if people have
62:25
questions Jay maybe we can use that as a
62:27
way to organize people's comments and
62:30
questions does that sound like a good
62:31
idea here and see who's got a raised
62:34
hand so that's fine I don't see anybody
62:40
yet oh I see hands I see okay Holly
62:44
that's the first one I saw pop-up okay
62:47
so um I want to say thank you to Adam
62:53
and Christy and Josh for all of the work
62:56
that you guys put into this budget
62:58
especially when this is kind of a crazy
63:02
and unusual chaotic time for all of us
63:04
personally and professionally so quick
63:07
thank you for that and then my questions
63:10
I'll just kind of put them out there and
63:12
then let you respond rather than trying
63:14
to get an answer each one I wanted to
63:18
know Josh what your thoughts are on the
63:21
future of the smart boards in all of the
63:24
classrooms I know I saw that there's
63:27
that you have an inventory and it was
63:29
combined with a flat screen so I was
63:31
wondering if those were kind of on their
63:33
way out and then for Christy I had a
63:37
question about the classifications that
63:40
you gave the numbers of and the
63:43
breakdown by what the type was like
63:47
learning disability
63:47
in autism and such and why that was only
63:50
for in district and why the number four
63:54
overall wasn't included there all right
63:58
let's try Josh first let's do Josh first
64:01
and see if we can answer I had a
64:02
question about those smart boards too so
64:04
I'm glad you asked that Holly yeah so
64:07
smart boards as a technology the company
64:11
hasn't really innovated their product
64:13
and companies such as Ben Q which is
64:18
what we've made our investment in have
64:21
these 86 inch touch boards which are
64:24
about a third of the cost of what we
64:26
used to pay for our smart words so we're
64:30
able to rotate out we have a whole list
64:33
of priority of which ones are going and
64:36
braking first and that's the order that
64:38
we're replacing them in and putting them
64:41
into you it's the word that we're
64:44
putting in is the same word that we put
64:46
in the upper in upper L those words have
64:50
really been popular they've been they're
64:52
stable they're they have really good
64:56
software on them and also as now that
65:00
everybody has a device and we've become
65:01
very mobile we want to make sure that
65:04
everybody can cast their device to the
65:07
display so the smart boards they can't
65:09
do that unless we put some other device
65:11
behind it so in a lot of places that
65:13
make sense to invest in flat panel
65:15
boards that are touch thank you okay and
65:20
then I can Claire the clarification
65:24
point on the classifications by category
65:26
so that includes in-district meaning our
65:29
in District students and also our CSC
65:31
placed out of District students okay
65:35
thank you and do you track the parent
65:38
placed out of district we have the in
65:41
for me but parentally placed out of
65:43
district are not included in the beds
65:45
day numbers because they're not enrolled
65:48
in in the district right but I guess I
65:53
was wondering if you if you happen to
65:57
take a look at the number that are
65:59
classified but
66:01
parentally placed yes we do you just
66:05
give me one moment just as I'm going
66:07
through my charts here so during this
66:12
current school year we have 42
66:14
parentally placed students for the 2019
66:18
school year 2018 20 school year these
66:22
are all can I just come up these are all
66:24
students who are classified and
66:25
correctly place correct I don't know I
66:28
don't know the numbers for parental
66:31
placed general education stop right okay
66:34
I just want to confirm and Christy would
66:37
would you have the information for the
66:41
what how they're classified for those
66:44
parentally placed then I don't have the
66:47
breakdown of those classifications as I
66:49
do from the bed-stuy information I'm
66:54
sure I can pull that information four
66:58
classifications of purnsley place
67:00
students okay I mean it's it's it's not
67:02
all that relevant I guess on the budget
67:04
but it's something I'm interested to to
67:06
know more about please hmm okay are you
67:11
good Holly yeah okay I think Vickie was
67:14
next and then Hillary okay
67:17
I just want to say overall to the entire
67:20
team thank you so very much for the
67:23
incredible work you've done you know in
67:27
light of the unprecedented times that we
67:29
find ourselves in I just want to say
67:31
that I feel you haven't missed a beat
67:33
with all especially with the
67:36
instructional aspects of this which is
67:38
so unusual with whatever what else is
67:41
going on with schools all over the state
67:45
if not the country and so I just want
67:48
people to understand how extensive your
67:50
plan has been you haven't talked about
67:52
the I Learning document that you shared
67:55
with us and that was so impressive and
67:57
it was so detailed
68:00
in all of the instructions that you've
68:03
given to your staff it you know had
68:05
instructional guide lines covering
68:07
instructional delivery with supported
68:10
technology platforms and approve
68:12
tools with schedules for eye learning
68:15
and recommended lesson in activity times
68:18
lesson guidelines professional supports
68:21
for staff and supports for students and
68:24
special area staff so I just want to say
68:27
how impressive that document was and I
68:30
know that you submitted it to stay dead
68:32
on Sunday we're still waiting to hear
68:34
from them and I suspect that our
68:36
districts plan is much more detailed
68:38
than what they have and so I hope that
68:43
they take a good look at that it's it's
68:46
an amazing template and I just want to
68:50
say Josh you mentioned that we are one
68:53
on one initiative is what enabled us to
68:56
do this so quickly but you know other
68:59
districts also have one-on-one systems
69:03
and so I think you are being very modest
69:06
and I think that the work you've done
69:08
really speaks to the collective talent
69:11
that we have here and I really want to
69:12
emphasize that and recognize it I've got
69:16
a couple of questions I'm curious about
69:19
what the equity fellows are doing
69:21
exactly um I'm also well I just I'll
69:27
just go one out of time so could someone
69:30
describe the equity fellows and what
69:32
their goals are and their mission is
69:34
Tony yes sure thanks Vicky the equity
69:38
fellowship actually hasn't officially
69:39
launched today was supposed to be our
69:40
first meeting but due to the school
69:42
closure we have postponed at this point
69:45
but what we are doing is putting this
69:47
fellowship together it's a cross-section
69:49
of our staff from K through 12 and we're
69:51
going to be looking and exploring issues
69:53
associated with equity with inclusivity
69:56
with race with gender and how we can
69:59
think about those things as it relates
70:01
to the learning experiences in our
70:02
district we're also going to work
70:05
through considering what supports we
70:08
might want to explore what professional
70:09
development we may want to consider and
70:11
offer some recommendations to the
70:13
superintendent for her consideration
70:14
moving forward so that's broadly what
70:18
the focus is going to be okay thank you
70:21
and I have just two more questions
70:22
um the nwea mapping
70:26
tests it has increased the budget by
70:28
$40,000 um I know what that is I think
70:31
it's um you know a little bit of a game
70:34
changer with testing and I wonder if you
70:36
could explain to the community why that
70:38
test is different as for us in terms of
70:42
assessing student learning yeah it's a
70:45
it's a good question this excuse me we
70:48
have an echo here let's see oh this I
70:50
think you're gonna have to turn your
70:51
speaker down oh okay sorry
70:56
this this nwea Maps test our students in
70:59
grades three through eight have taken it
71:01
twice so far and that stands for the
71:04
measure of academic progress and it's
71:07
basically it's a smart assessment that
71:09
identifies students strengths and areas
71:12
of concern in both math and in literacy
71:16
in reading and so we test students
71:18
typically the NWA recommends that you
71:20
test students three times a year once in
71:22
the early fall once in the winter and
71:24
once in the spring and it basically maps
71:26
progress along a normed curve and what
71:29
makes it very different than a standard
71:31
I are several things that make it really
71:33
different than a standardized test um
71:34
one is it's the first smart assessment
71:37
that I know of in the district and by
71:39
smart assessment I mean that it actually
71:42
changes each student gives a different
71:44
unique assessment to that student
71:46
because with each question that they
71:47
answer right you know correctly or
71:49
incorrectly it actually asks them a
71:51
different question so if they get it
71:52
they'll start on a grade level question
71:54
they'll ask if the student gets it
71:56
correct and they'll ask a more
71:57
challenging question and the assessment
71:59
will actually change the questions to
72:01
drill down into areas that they can
72:03
identify that the student needs some
72:04
extra support in and areas that the
72:06
student is particularly strong in and it
72:08
gives the teachers immediate feedback on
72:11
what the students know and can do so
72:13
they can tailor their instruction
72:14
immediately it also helps us identify
72:16
which students are high performing and
72:20
low growth for example or students that
72:22
are not growing as a typical normed
72:25
curve would grow so you can picture it
72:27
almost like when we bring our our own
72:29
children to the pediatrician and they
72:31
put them on a growth curve and they say
72:32
that they're you know they give you kind
72:33
of a percentile of how the student is
72:35
growing it's very similar to that
72:37
in Anthony la but it gives us much more
72:39
granular data with regard to how well
72:42
students are performing so I plan to
72:44
include some of that data into my data
72:46
report for the board in the fall that I
72:48
typically do where I could do all the
72:50
state assessments and SAT scores region
72:52
scores when I start to show you some map
72:53
scores so you can track how students are
72:55
growing over time in the district and
72:57
we've shared those reports with parents
72:59
so they can find them in the campus
73:00
backpack on the portal ok great
73:03
Thank You Adam and my last question is
73:04
for Josh on the Lisa's and hardware
73:07
screen I was just curious I can't
73:09
remember exactly what was on the screen
73:10
now but um what do you see there as
73:14
changing over time and becoming more
73:18
obsolete do you see any of the lines
73:21
like you know they're on the desktops
73:24
yeah it's the right screen or do you
73:27
want a different slide I think yeah this
73:31
slide is perfectly yeah this is good um
73:33
yeah so what would I see as our
73:37
transformation over our Lisa's right we
73:40
generally use that for our canoe or
73:43
computers I see it changing over to
73:46
right as we get our laptops iPads are
73:51
everybody having a mobile device I see
73:55
us remove desktops being removed from
73:58
most places except for desktop office
74:02
areas so teachers are becoming mobile
74:04
throughout their classrooms so desktops
74:06
are there not as reliant as their
74:08
desktops in their classrooms so those
74:10
are starting to get removed and we're
74:12
gonna see a decrease in that but really
74:15
desktops will only be for office
74:18
functions right firk for clerical and
74:21
for finance and for as we move forward
74:24
so that that's really where I see the
74:27
changing and I also see the changing in
74:29
how we do printing and copying I see
74:32
that being a much more centralized
74:34
solution as we start to do that so we've
74:38
been experimenting that way an upper L
74:40
where every teacher where there's no
74:42
printers up there there's only one copy
74:44
machine the teachers print to the cloud
74:46
and then they scan their badge and
74:48
they're printing comes out from that one
74:51
copier and that's a big cost savings to
74:53
not have so many printers in the
74:55
district is there a dollar figure
74:57
associated to those two categories I
75:01
don't have a dollar figure yet that'll
75:04
probably come over the next year I just
75:05
had my first meeting with the copy
75:07
company today to talk about those
75:09
figures and we have a project that's
75:11
collecting because our toner is
75:15
decentralized
75:16
I have a project of getting all of those
75:18
figures together to find out how much we
75:20
spend on toner and paper so that we can
75:23
start to centralize that in two
75:24
locations and everything before digital

75:26
okay I'd be curious to know when you're
75:29
ready okay that's all I got for now
75:32
thank you okay I think Hillary had some
75:35
questions and then Warren Josh I guess
75:38
this is a question for you and just sort
75:40
of you know echo would have everybody
75:42
say thank you to everybody this has been
75:46
bizarre and challenging um I guess Josh
75:50
my question is you mentioned that we've
75:54
recently been approved to get more iPads
75:58
I guess for the youngest kids for their
76:00
kindergarten and first graders um what
76:03
is the time frame I guess on that as my
76:07
question because my understanding from
76:10
questions I've gotten over the course of
76:13
today from parents is that our youngest
76:15
kids do not currently have devices home
76:18
with them for the next several
76:20
fingers-crossed weeks of distance
76:24
learning and well I guess my question is
76:27
are those
76:28
he's an order something that we can see
76:30
being rolled out while we're hopefully
76:33
off for the next couple weeks or are we
76:35
looking much further out yeah so right
76:38
so our kindergarteners did not go home
76:40
with devices because we were able to
76:44
consolidate and and pick through to get
76:46
all of our first grades sent home with
76:48
devices the the smart bond funding was
76:54
approved and is we're ready to place
76:56
that order we're working through I've
76:59
been working through our purchasing
77:00
department and to get that in and I've
77:03
been working with
77:04
our Apple representatives to hopefully
77:07
speed up the delivery of those devices
77:10
to get to us as quickly as possible with
77:14
everything I can't put a timeframe on it
77:16
but on delivery but I know that from our
77:19
side we're doing everything we can to
77:21
get Apple that order as quickly as
77:23
possible okay great and hopefully we'll
77:26
be back in school before it gets here
77:28
yeah if I could just Warren I just was
77:37
gonna provide a quick rationale for the
77:39
decision we labored over the decision
77:41
with kindergarten and first-grade with
77:43
regard to the other option that we were
77:46
considering was trying to figure out who
77:49
had suitable devices at home in first
77:51
grade and kindergarten and then fill in
77:53
the gaps with the devices that we had
77:55
trying to get to a point where we had
77:57
every student with a device whether it
77:58
was our own device or our device the the
78:00
challenge of that is really the apps
78:03
that we install on our iPads and having
78:05
a unified platform and so it was really
78:07
tough we debated it as a PD team we
78:09
talked to some teachers and other
78:10
building administrators and where we
78:12
really landed was we wanted the
78:14
consistency of platform for it for the
78:16
first grade we thought it would be more
78:17
powerful to be able to do that and then
78:19
design lessons for kindergarten that
78:21
didn't rely on those apps as opposed to
78:23
every teacher in first grade and second
78:25
grade having a real mix of different
78:27
devices that may or may not have the
78:29
important apps that we use so that's
78:31
where we landed but I think it's
78:32
probably important for the board to hear
78:33
that rationale although it was a tough
78:35
decision because we had people on both
78:37
sides of that fence and we finally had
78:38
to make a decision
78:40
thank you know that that makes a lot of
78:42
sense but I'm I'm happy to have the
78:44
clarification okay I don't really have
78:48
any questions I probably will as I
78:51
digging through some of these numbers
78:53
but I just want to thank Christine for
78:56
all the work she's done over the last
78:58
couple days since we've gotten ourselves
78:59
into this issue with Corona and Josh I
79:03
know we have one-to-one but you you made
79:07
this happen very seamlessly I heard from
79:10
some some community members that they
79:14
were very thankful that you were able to
79:16
provide
79:17
spots or families that didn't have them
79:19
so I know we can we can provide the
79:21
technology or the the iPads laptops but
79:25
unless you can access Internet
79:27
it's just a piece it's just a a boat
79:29
anchor right and the last thing is Adam
79:33
I'm not trying lis not John or Tony but
79:35
Adam you you you also work crazy hard
79:39
over the weekend but you also put
79:40
together that professional development
79:44
learning offer that that didn't just
79:48
spend our district or or Westchester
79:52
expand the entire country and I know
79:54
we're live in a very fortunate place
79:56
where we we have a district that has a
79:59
lot of resources and it's nice to be
80:01
able to share those resources and as
80:05
well as get information from other
80:06
people but to be able to share what
80:08
we're learning so thank you very much
80:09
for helping keep Chapa o'clock on the
80:14
top of education ensuring that people
80:17
know that we're here to help not just do
80:20
our own thing
80:21
Thank You Warren you may have caught on
80:23
my slide I put in parenthesis it was
80:26
actually an international conference we
80:30
had a teacher participate from Germany
80:32
and another one from Australia and so we
80:34
thought that was pretty amazing just the
80:35
power of social media that it got out
80:37
there and somehow they got their hands
80:40
on and then they joined us so we thought
80:41
that was pretty neat but thank you I am
80:43
I just have a couple comments and a
80:46
brief question um I'll start with Adam
80:48
and go through it's hard when you go
80:50
through these like three amazing
80:51
presentations and I know we went one
80:52
after the other you know I I feel
80:57
blessed I think everyone else feels
80:59
blessed that not only that we have all
81:01
of you here as tremendous leaders to
81:04
show the way for us but you provide a
81:06
great source of comfort for our
81:08
community all of us our students our
81:11
parents in a very challenging and trying
81:13
time and there are so many things and
81:16
yet we also know that all of you have
81:18
your own personal things to deal with
81:20
right now and yet somehow you are being
81:23
unbelievably professional and making
81:26
sure that our district and our students
81:29
are getting the absolute
81:31
services and your best selves right now
81:34
so it is it does not go unnoticed a
81:39
couple of things Adam you know looking
81:42
at that document is incredible in terms
81:44
of you know the base camp and the
81:47
learning that went on so and also you
81:49
know the the whole island document that
81:52
we get to see all of as you see it as
81:54
faculty we see it as board members so
81:56
it's just something for you Christine
81:58
whatever I'm wondering what we can share
82:00
with the community moving forward we got
82:03
a letter just today from a community
82:05
member who's also an educator who you
82:07
know was just completely blown away by
82:09
all of yesterday's events and and so
82:11
what we can share with the community I'd
82:13
like to figure out a way down the road
82:14
to share that people will have questions
82:17
but also just seeing what we are doing
82:20
as district again would provide more a
82:23
more source of comfort and adoration
82:26
which is necessarily bad so respond
82:31
I'm Adam do you want to talk a little
82:33
about the eye learning
82:34
document for parents that's gonna be
82:36
going out tomorrow morning yeah I wanted
82:38
to mention that when Vicky mentioned the
82:40
document that the board had seen was a
82:42
document that we worked worked
82:44
collaboratively with the teachers on and
82:46
it's an extensive document describing
82:47
our process for eye learning so that way
82:49
we have some theory through the faculty
82:51
but we have taken that document and
82:54
converted it into a parent resource for
82:56
eye learning so that will be going out
82:58
very soon we hope it'll go out tomorrow
82:59
but it's quite a few pages and it's got
83:02
a lot of ideas and support and
83:04
information around how to structure
83:06
students day and what to expect of
83:08
teachers and who to go to for help and
83:11
write contact information and all of
83:13
those kinds of things so that will go
83:15
out to the community very soon we know
83:17
everything's happening so fast right now
83:18
that we're just trying to get
83:19
information out as quickly as we can and
83:21
at the same time be like cautious and
83:23
cognizant of not just having information
83:26
avalanche on the community so we've been
83:28
trying to be appropriately communicative
83:30
while still measured in that so that
83:33
information will go out but I'm also
83:35
hearing you say Jane there perhaps we
83:36
should do a little more to share some of
83:39
these things that are happening behind
83:40
the scenes and kind of under the hood
83:41
right and so so parents can see that in
83:43
the community can see that
83:44
so we've been thinking about maybe some
83:46
kind of press release or getting that
83:47
information you know it's a lot of work
83:52
and I think the community would
83:54
appreciate seeing everything that has
83:56
been going on behind the scenes so
83:58
that's great and I'm glad that that's
84:00
going out
84:01
moving on to Josh I I don't know how you
84:06
keep up with this technology the way
84:08
that you do and and it's really
84:10
remarkable especially the whole ed law
84:12
2d situation so I was curious I guess
84:16
just all that we see all the measures
84:19
you're taking and obviously we're always
84:21
seeing in the news about whole school
84:23
systems where there's been hacks and and
84:25
and problems and shutting down their
84:27
systems and that that hasn't happened
84:29
here because we know that you're very
84:31
vigilant I'm curious how much you think
84:34
we're going to have to continue to
84:36
invest in this will that be an
84:38
increasing cost will it stay somewhat
84:40
constant what are your thoughts on that
84:42
um cybersecurity is going to be an
84:45
increasing cost to our to our budget we
84:51
as we look towards even as next year
84:54
right doing sort of these external
84:58
testings and these internal testing so
85:00
just to even just to test our systems is
85:04
going to increase you know it's constant
85:07
cat-and-mouse game with this right we
85:10
really need to think about how we
85:12
structure our systems and lots of
85:14
different ways and also so that also
85:17
increases our backup costs because we
85:19
want to make sure if something does
85:22
happen can we get back up and running as
85:24
quickly as possible so you know having
85:27
off-site backup and on-site backup and
85:29
cloud backup and non cloud backup so all
85:31
these things that we think about to make
85:34
sure that there were we're as protected
85:35
as possible I do see this as sort of a
85:39
gradual er increasing cost over time you
85:43
know hopefully plateauing at some point
85:44
but we need to make sure that we protect
85:47
ourselves first and foremost and our
85:48
students right all right well thank you
85:51
I mean it's it's a it's an incredibly
85:53
large task to keep up with all this and
85:56
you do it remarkably well
85:57
so thank you and Christy I really just
86:00
want to thank you for giving a great
86:02
first presentation from your basement
86:04
and I'm really taking this on and
86:07
Christine thank you I know in
86:09
conjunction with the restructuring of
86:11
our special ed pyramid there I'm really
86:15
looking forward to a really good set up
86:17
and a really good working environment
86:18
that's really gonna benefit a lot of our
86:20
students and I just wanted to say thanks
86:23
very much thank you Jane you know right
86:26
now we really feel like we're stuck in
86:27
the present because of everything that's
86:29
going on around us we have a great
86:31
future and I feel like Josh Christy and
86:34
Adam have presented a budget to you
86:37
tonight that really addresses some of
86:39
our community needs moving future and it
86:42
allows us to continue to innovate in a
86:44
way that this community deserves so I'm
86:47
really grateful for their work
86:48
especially over the course of these past
86:50
couple days an extraordinarily difficult
86:52
based on a number of things that we've
86:54
had to work through as a school
86:56
committee thank you for that so Josh you
87:02
should sign out tomorrow's gonna be a
87:04
big day for both of you because we're
87:06
going to do our soft launch stuff Josh
87:08
am i doing I hope I'm the host of this
87:10
so in Josh signs out so we'll be looking
87:23
at this a lot to D policy but I just
87:27
want to share that I was at a seminar
87:29
earlier on in the year on on these new
87:34
cybersecurity requirements and everyone
87:38
was very alarmed with the changes and
87:40
what we would have to do and I went up
87:41
to the presenters at the end and I said
87:43
that's the question and they said oh
87:44
you're from Chappaqua you're in really
87:45
good hands because we got a lot of our
87:47
advice from josh bloch in your district
87:49
so let everyone know that you know we
87:54
are in good shape and we will be looking
87:57
at that policy thank you we will have
88:01
Joker mando present the facilities and
88:04
snow percent athletics and then I'll do
88:08
the remainder of our budget
88:09
presentations and then we'll have
88:10
plan for her work going into our PTA
88:12
budget arm speeds of course it next week
88:16
so well how about how we're going to
88:18
handle that next Wednesday for everybody
88:20
okay
88:22
superintendents report okay and the
88:25
presentations were we are then moving on
88:29
to committee reports does anyone have
88:33
anything to report there's nothing on
88:36
communications right now or is there
88:38
anything on facilities or any others
88:40
that anyone needs your report no I think
88:44
we need to have a policy committee we'll
88:45
have to figure out how we're going to do
88:46
that okay okay and so we are moving on
88:51
to what is normally our public comment
88:55
period for the attendees who are there
88:58
and listening now as you know we we
89:01
always do welcome public comments and we
89:03
appreciate hearing comments from the
89:06
community this is a particularly
89:08
challenging situation now that we here
89:10
are on zoom' because it does not allow
89:14
for us to actually identify who would
89:17
potentially be making a comment to us to
89:19
jump in at this point so while we wish
89:23
we could continue that right now while
89:25
we are on zoom' that makes it very
89:28
difficult for us so because it actually
89:32
even though it's not a legal requirement
89:34
to have public comment which I'd like to
89:36
stay but it's something that means a lot
89:38
to us as board members and as a
89:40
community what we would really like
89:42
people to do right now is reach out to
89:45
us questions about the budget about the
89:47
presentations everything is online are
89:50
not you know ways to reach us by email
89:53
any of you always are welcome to reach
89:56
us by phone I think we're all going to
89:58
be very easy to get a hold of in the
90:01
coming weeks and we want to be we really
90:04
want to be helpful to the community so I
90:06
would really like to encourage everyone
90:08
now to send your comments to us
90:12
email us with questions and that's how
90:14
we will have to handle public comment
90:16
for this period of time okay so I am
90:21
going to move on to item number three
90:23
I'm Marge
90:24
and approvals and ratifications item 3.1
90:27
be it resolved that the Board of
90:28
Education accepts the minutes of the
90:30
March 3rd 2020 Board of Ed meeting can I
90:34
have a motion for item 3.1 I move can I
90:40
have a second I can't hear anyone
90:46
maybe hand a few second Polly okay I
90:50
couldn't see it sorry it was a little
90:52
covered in my screen any discussion any
90:54
comments hold on
90:57
Holli take your mute off just in case so
91:00
we can hear you oh I'm sorry I didn't
91:03
realize I was still no no it's no
91:04
problem okay okay um
91:08
all in favor of items 3.1 approving
91:11
minutes
91:12
hi moving onto for Christine
91:16
I recommend 4.1 instructional as
91:19
presented I move that we accept the
91:22
superintendent's recommendation for item
91:23
4.1 any discussion or questions all in
91:32
favor
91:32
I wanna congratulate Monica Mandel I
91:37
know we will support her and celebrate
91:39
her and June's
91:41
in some way she has been here for a long
91:44
time so I just would like to
91:45
congratulate her on her retirement from
91:47
Lauren Brooke so thanks Daddo she said
91:51
she had a very very good run at wrong
91:53
and Brooke and there's no
91:56
non-instructional so we can move into
91:58
the that is our consent agenda which
92:04
permits the Board of Education to make
92:06
effective use of its time by adopting in
92:09
a single motion those relatively routine
92:12
in everyday matters which are included
92:14
any board member can be heard on any
92:17
issue but and then that can be discussed
92:20
or pulled out if our consent agenda if
92:23
that may be but right now I'm going to
92:25
ask that we approve items 5.1 let me
92:29
turn my page through 0.11 all items
92:35
listed in our consent agenda
92:37
a motion to approve the consent agenda
92:40
poof thank you any one second miss I
92:46
will second oh wait look we got to
92:48
Hilary seconds does anyone have a
92:50
question or a comment discussion about
92:53
any items in the consent agenda
92:54
yeah should 5.11 be ready it doesn't
93:00
have to be read but you can read it if
93:01
you'd like to I'll be happy to read 5.11
93:06
okay before I get to that I just want to
93:09
recognize the gift of $500 from
93:13
ExxonMobil they give gifts are regularly
93:15
every year and I also want to recognize
93:20
the gift from the Society for science
93:23
and the public in the amount of $4,000
93:25
to the two-horse really high school
93:27
students who are Regeneron Science
93:29
Talent yeah 2020 scholars so we always
93:33
appreciate these really general generous
93:35
gifts I think that's a good idea
93:42
thank you I will be item 5.1 1 on our
93:45
agenda which says whereas on March 7th
93:49
2020 the governor of New York State
93:50
declared a state of emergency due to the
93:53
outbreak of novel coronavirus kovat 19
93:56
and whereas on March 14th 2020 the
93:59
governor issued executive order number
94:01
202 point to describe having certain
94:04
school calendar requirements and the
94:06
need for school districts to establish
94:08
critical educational supports for
94:10
students and distance learning options
94:12
now therefore be it resolved that the
94:15
board hereby adopts a revised school
94:17
calendar for the 2019 2020 school year
94:20
as presented by the superintendent of
94:22
schools at this meeting and the chip app
94:24
across Central School District i
94:26
learning guidance document as revised on
94:28
March 8th 2020 as presented to the board
94:31
at this meeting a copy of the revised
94:33
school district calendar for the 2019
94:35
2020 school year and said learning I
94:38
then said i learning guidance document
94:40
shall be incorporated by relevance by
94:43
reference within the minutes of this
94:45
meeting I need to be
94:50
also very nice thank you are and I
94:52
appreciate that does anyone else have
94:55
any other comments or questions about
94:58
the consent agenda I'm look I'm sorry to
95:02
hold this up I'm just looking at just
95:05
these few items and because we're in
95:07
such an unusual situation sometimes we
95:10
have agenda at our meetings outside the
95:13
Met people can pick up and I just show
95:16
that this is so we're trying this out as
95:19
such a new saying I wonder if it would
95:21
be a good idea if you were to just very
95:24
quickly to give a rough idea of what
95:26
each of the items are it's it wouldn't
95:29
take very long but I think that just how
95:31
people understand what we're moving
95:35
because they may not have access to our
95:37
agenda you want to do that all right I
95:40
would be happy to get you know just do a
95:44
quick rundown or just the health and
95:46
welfare services agreements and support
95:49
services etc I just I just want to share
95:53
that um and I don't I don't know this
95:58
changes your thinking Vicki that we have
95:59
the agenda posted on the home page with
96:02
the live link connected right to it as
96:06
soon as you enter into the CCSD website
96:08
so we've made this much more public so
96:14
access to it yeah it's it's like right
96:17
on the front page as our first news item
96:19
like the agenda with the with the link
96:22
attached to it okay if you feel you know
96:26
my my concern is just access yeah and
96:29
transparency so if it's easily
96:32
accessible then that would answer the
96:36
concern Christine could could we just
96:40
make sure that when we post the recorded
96:43
version for people who aren't watching
96:45
live that the agenda is very easily
96:47
found next to that sure Adam do you want
96:52
to just go to the website really quick
96:54
and show everyone where the agenda is if
96:56
you go to the main page under district
96:58
news
97:02
I see what you're concerned about Vicki
97:04
I'm not as worried about the people who
97:06
found their way into the live stream
97:08
right now but people who take a look
97:10
after the fact on a recording may have
97:13
more trouble finding it it's one second
97:20
I just want to show you we have it in
97:23
our normal spot but then if you scroll
97:26
down we have it if you click my link we
97:31
have it there with the live streaming
97:35
video link and then we posted the whole
97:37
agenda we don't usually do this but I I
97:39
felt like we needed to be much more
97:43
upfront about where this was since we
97:46
weren't going to have public able to
97:48
attend the meeting so we made sure we
97:51
put the entire revised agenda up and the
97:54
live link right at the top I'm glad you
97:58
asked this question made that suggestion
97:59
because then it allows me to show
98:01
everyone what we've done I guess it's
98:03
worth going to all this - you know we
98:06
don't have to repeat this every time we
98:07
have a meeting like this but um I just I
98:11
must say we would have gotten through it
98:13
in all this time that we've been talking
98:15
would have gotten through it pretty
98:16
easily
98:16
I guess we just want to be consistent
98:20
with what we do and as long as people
98:21
know where to access the agenda then
98:25
we're in good shape yeah I feel like for
98:29
this particular situation until we can
98:32
have the public back at our meetings I
98:36
think we'll probably be posting the
98:38
agenda right in the front of our website
98:41
for each meeting so people know exactly
98:44
where to go and so it's easy for them to
98:46
click on the live stream and watch watch
98:53
as I try to navigate those on the turnin
98:57
stuff as I'm navigating Windows I think
99:00
I could also probably bring the agenda
99:02
up I didn't realize that I could toggle
99:04
between Windows like that so I'll get a
99:06
little better at this as I get a little
99:07
practice I think
99:15
okay so are we are we okay with
99:20
approving the consent agenda at this
99:22
point yes I think we were just at the
99:28
discussion point we had a motion in a
99:30
second and right so that's why me a
99:34
second cuz I don't know why my computer
99:37
went dark oh so do you mind giving me
99:39
just a second so I can see everyone okay
99:42
so all in favor of approving the consent
99:46
agenda item number 5a I just make a
99:55
comment on I just take this moment to
100:00
thank the Board of Education for all
100:02
their support for supporting and then
100:08
very to know that before have been able
100:11
to come in meet with in ability
100:16
decisions we need to make the support of
100:28
the bus and through all the issues that
100:32
we've had at navigate just let me take
100:35
this opportunity to thank you very much
100:39
thank you thank you well thank you we're
100:50
very happy that we can all work together
100:52
so well we're all thankful for each
100:54
other and we're lucky that we feel that
100:56
way so thank you for saying that move on
101:01
to item 6 which is facilities you
101:07
resolved that the Board of Education
101:08
acknowledges the following change orders
101:10
listed in six point one through six
101:14
point eight that were already approved
101:18
by the superintendent per our board
101:19
resolution previously adopted on June 14
101:22
to 2017 I just wanted to state that
101:25
there's quite a number of change orders
101:27
here
101:28
if Christine or John want a comment that
101:30
this really involves the default of our
101:32
contractor for our construction projects
101:37
and the surety has taken over so there
101:39
are a lot of change orders but this is
101:41
all a good thing in terms of moving our
101:44
construction projects forward so I
101:46
didn't know if you either if you wanted
101:47
to say anything about that but that's
101:50
what that's what these are for
101:53
yes I just add one point is that these
101:56
are all the change orders presented by
101:58
Bond X which is the surety that took
102:00
over top toe when dotto walked off the
102:04
job and so basically at this point they
102:07
have completed both schools both middle
102:09
schools so we are at the closing stage
102:11
okay all right thank you John so can I
102:17
have a motion to acknowledge the change
102:19
orders listed in six point one through
102:22
six point eight I move that way around
102:24
to change orders second I'll second that
102:30
any discussion or any other further
102:32
questions all in favor aye okay
102:41
financials 7.1 can I have a motion be it
102:45

102:46

102:48
report for February 2020 can I have a
102:51
motion to acknowledge receipt of the
102:52
treasurer support I move to acknowledge
102:54
receipt of the treasurer's report okay I
102:57
