What's Happening in chappaqua's schools January 21, 2020

Day of Service

Day of Service“He who is greatest among you shall be your servant.” ~ Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

To honor the life, teachings, and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Chappaqua's middle schools participated in a Day of Service on January 17th that connected students to organizations that meet a need in their community.

To help facilitate, a number of agencies -- Meals on Wheels, Project SHARE at HGHS, Chappaqua Volunteer Ambulance Corp, The SPCA of Westchester, Blue Lollipop Project, Bright Futures Afterschool Mentoring Program, Montrose Veterans Hospital, and Feeding Westchester -- were on hand to share information about their organizations and engage the students in hands-on service such as creating Valentine's Day cards for veterans, making snack bags and putting together care packages.

This was an opportunity to celebrate the multitude of service work students and families are doing outside of school hours. The experience gave those students an opportunity to share possibly recruit others to join their efforts and perhaps start something new.

Special thanks to everyone involved in making this year's Day of Service events come to fruition.

A Fond Farewell

After 35 years in education, our very own Dr. Martin Fitzgerald, Principal of Robert E. Bell Middle School, has announced his retirement, effective June 30, 2020. This is a bittersweet moment for us as Martin has been with the District since 1998 when he came on board as assistant principal of Bell before taking the helm in 2003. His contributions to Bell and the District have had a tremendous impact on so many of our students, faculty, support staff and families.

A consummate life-long learner, he recently received his Ed.D. in Education Leadership from Manhattanville College after successfully defending his doctoral dissertation entitled, “Intention and Impact: Implementing New York State’s Dignity for All Students Act (DASA) Policy in High Performing Middle Schools.” Martin embraces a learner’s stance and always keeps the focus on students and nurturing an environment where every individual is valued and appreciated.

Patient and thoughtful, practical and visionary, Martin is an outstanding leader who successfully bridges the space between proven traditions and progressive innovation. He also appreciates the importance of engagement and, as such ensures that everyone at Bell has a voice in the daily experience. Martin was instrumental in introducing and implementing the “Bell 4Core” initiative as a way to empower students to contribute to a school climate that is positive and inclusive, believing that middle school programs and practices must be developmentally responsive to the needs of young adolescents. Martin will be sorely missed by the entire administrative team. For all that Martin has accomplished at Bell, and for all that he has contributed to the Chappaqua school community, please join the District in thanking him and wishing him well as he moves on to future endeavors.

Community Focus Groups: Candidate Search - Principal of Robert E. Bell Middle School

Home of the BulldogsDr. Tony Sinanis, Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources and Leadership Development, will be overseeing the search to identify the next principal and assistant principal at Bell. As you may already know, in the summer of 2019, Mr. Tim Doyle announced his intention to retire at the conclusion of this school year. We realize it is critical to recruit established educational leaders who have experience in middle school leadership, so our process will begin immediately.

One of the first steps in the process will be the facilitation of focus groups. We are hoping to hear from key stakeholders in the Bell community to help establish a working list of desired characteristics to guide the applicant screening, interview and selection processes.

With this in mind, Dr. Sinanis will be at Bell on Thursday, January 30, 2020 to meet with community members and staff. Please join us for the Community Focus Groups scheduled for 9:30am and again at 7pm at Bell Middle School.

If you have any questions about the process moving forward, please contact Dr. Sinanis at ToSinanis@ccsd.ws.

Community Focus Groups: Candidate Search - Asst. Sup't. for Pupil Personnel Services (PPS)

Highly effective leadership in our pupil personnel services program is essential for all of our students, staff, and families. With the impending retirement of Dr. Heidi McCarthy, we are committed to finding the best candidate for this position and ensuring that they have a strong voice in the instructional and social-emotional direction of the District.

In an effort to attract only the strongest candidates with a proven success record, we have partnered with Hazard, Young, Attea, & Associates, an educational search firm that will oversee the initial phases of this confidential search process with a primary focus on recruiting potential candidates from the region with a thorough screening process. HYA will be facilitating focus groups with various stakeholder groups to help establish a working list of desired characteristics to guide the applicant screening, interview and selection processes.

A representative from HYA will be in Chappaqua on Wednesday, January 29, 2020 for several meetings with community members and staff. Please join us at the Community Focus Groups scheduled for 10am and again at 7pm at Seven Bridges Middle School.During these sessions, you will be able to share your views regarding the requisite qualities, skills, and attributes you would like to see in our new assistant superintendent. You will also be asked to offer your perspectives on what makes Chappaqua unique, as well as to provide insight as to potential challenges the new assistant superintendent might face.
