Cali Cuneo and Ellie LeibnerThe English curricular experience encourages students to refine their thinking skills through the study of language, composition, literature, and media. Students read both classic and contemporary literature, discuss literary works in relation to their meanings, form, style, and structure, and develop a growing vocabulary of critical terms.

In addition, students are required to write across a variety of genres and styles, both analytic and creative, and to become more sensitive to the logical development of ideas and the manipulation of language.

Hands-on Science at Roaring Brook

Second-grade scientists are learning how plants and animals survive in different habitats, how/why organisms interact with their environment, and the effects of these interactions. To apply their classroom work and content knowledge in real-world experiences, students went on a scientific expedition to the Pinecliff Sanctuary to study the interdependent relationships in ecosystems.

Student scientists learned how to use nets to scoop pond life as they collected newts, tadpoles, water spiders, pill clams, small pond snails, frogs, duckweed, and water striders. They also observed black snakes sunning themselves on the boardwalk made of recycled plastic. Students then went on a nature walk and learned about the plants that are native to the woods and pond area of the sanctuary, and used their scientific lens to observe and wonder about the treasures they collected.

Hatch day was finally here. . .Meet Roaring Brook's newest 1st-graders!

As part of the first-graders' exploration of the chicken life cycle, the students experienced interdisciplinary lessons that intergrated science, math, communication skills, arts, and social studies. The students were also involved in preparing the eggs, setting up the incubator, recording progress, turning eggs, and candling.

Candling is the process where a bright light is shined into the egg, illuminating its contents to learn which of the chickens' eggs are fertile and will hatch into baby chicks.

Students have now moved on to providing for the needs of their newest classmates by making sure they are fed and that they have ample playtime.

The "Entertainers" host annual luncheon

The Entertainers perform for a group of senior citizens. Each spring, members of both the Seven Bridges and Bell School Entertainers Club unite to host a luncheon for senior citizens. They invited residents from The New Castle Senior Center, My Second Home, The Mount Kisco Senior Center, and The Atria in Briarcliff.

On a day that fostered the spirit of community, students and guests strengthened the connection between generations by spending time together and sharing their experiences. Then, The Entertainers performed a variety of acts and attendees also enjoyed performances by music ensemble groups from both schools.

The Entertainers are community service groups consisting of students in grades 5-8 who travel to senior citizen centers to share their talents and spend time with seniors in neighboring communities. In the past, student performances have included singing, dancing, magic tricks, playing a musical instrument, and many other creative talents.

Elementary program is music to our ears

If you hear singing, percussion instruments, recorders, beginning band and string instruments, and see students moving, dancing to music and improvising, there is a good chance you are in one of our elementary schools.

In general music classes, K-4 students develop musical skills and concepts through a hands-on approach that incorporates singing, chant, and poetry. As part of the general music program students at every grade level also participate in a musical performance each year that is open to families and spotlights the musical skills the students developed in music class.

Music Collage

The beginning instrumental music program starts in the fourth grade with lessons and group instruction on the violin, viola, cello, double bass, flute, clarinet, alto saxophone, trumpet, trombone, and percussion. Famileis are invited to an end-of-year recital so students can showcase their talents and perform in front of a live audience.

Being a member of the band or orchestra not only prepares students for middle and high school ensembles but also develops skills in self-discipline, concentration, cooperation, physical coordination, and aural perception.
