President Tipp convened the public meeting at 7:42 pm.

Moved by Warren Messner to convene the public meeting at 7:42 pm. Seconded by Alyson Gardner. Motion passed 5-0.

Information Business Affairs

1.1

President's Report

President Tipp spoke in greater detail about the Governor's "State of the State" Budget and indicated that the final NYS Budget deadline is 3/31/18. She mentioned that she and others will be attending a NYSSBA Capital Conference in Albany and encouraged the community to contact their state representatives.

Superintendent's Report

Dr. Ackerman spoke briefly about the Board/Administration Retreat that had taken place earlier in the day focusing on Strategic Coherence Planning. She thanked the District's SCP team for their participation. She also spoke about the 2nd Annual First Lego League tournament that was held at Robert E. Bell Middle School the weekend prior and congratulated participants

2018-19 Draft District Calendar

Presentations:

Seven Bridges Middle School Innovative & Programmatic Highlights

Principal Andrew Corsilia and Assistant Principal Greg Stiefel gave a presentation on Active Learning Through Innovative Spaces/Furniture and Problem-Based Learning at Seven Bridges. 7th Grade science teachers Kathleen Kuczma and Nancy Soliz highlighted the new invasive species coursework emphasizing the outdoor component and the success of the program to date. 8th grade Social Studies teachers Laurie Lichtenstein and Jamie Egan, along with two students highlighted the Civil Rights unit and the challenge of memorializing a person or event.

  • Mr. Michael Frengs, Teacher of Mathematics, Horace Greeley High School, effective June 30, 2018.

Request for Parental Leave of Absence:

  • Ms. Ingrid Tavarez, Teacher of Elementary Education, Westorchard Elementary School, effective December 20, 2017 through February 28, 2018.

Dr. Christine Ackerman made the following recommendations:

 

 

Appointment:

  • Mr. James Mahoney, Maintenance Foreperson, Buildings and Grounds, effective January 25, 2018. His starting salary will be $73,161, step 13 in accordance with the custodial contract.

Resignation for the purpose of retirement:

  • Ms. Mary Crewe, Occupational Therapist, effective June 30, 2018.

Resignation:

  • Ms. Jennifer Michel, teacher aide at Douglas Grafflin Elementary School, effective January 17, 2018.

Moved by Alyson Gardner to approve Item 5.1. Seconded by Victoria Tipp. Motion passed 5-0.

 

5.2

BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Education approves a contract with S&L Plumbing and Heating Corp., for Capital Improvements at Middle Schools, dated December 6, 2017, in the amount of $477,440.00, as presented to the Board and incorporated in the minutes of this meeting and authorizes the Board President to execute the contract.

Moved by Alyson Gardner to approve Item 5.2. Seconded by Jane Kimmel Shepardson. Motion passed 5-0.

 

5.3

WHEREAS, the District owns the attached list of items which are no longer useful or necessary for school district purposes and of no value to the School District;

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board hereby declares such items to be surplus property and of no value to the School District and authorizes the disposal of such equipment in a prudent manner in accordance with law.

Moved by Alyson Gardner to approve Item 5.3. Seconded by Warren Messner. Motion passed 5-0.

 

5.4

BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Education hereby authorizes the school attorneys' to contract with a litigation related consultant as described to the Board, pursuant to Paragraph I of the Retainer Agreement between the law firm and the District dated July 1, 2017.
