SeeSaw, DreamBox, and Padlet, Oh My!
The iPads will allow for fast and safe access to online research, applications that support personalized learning, seamless collaboration using AirPlay, Google Apps, and Apple Classroom, the development of elementary coding skills, and easy creation and editing of multimedia projects. These devices will be used in both classroom spaces and the newly constructed Global Learning Centers. Some of the applications our younger learners are currently utilizing to encourage deeper learning, reflection and collaboration include:
A virtual bulletin board, Padlet is an online collaboration and communication tool that allows students to easily express their thoughts on a common topic while also getting to read what others have to share. This virtual board allows collaborators to simultaneously create and organize posts of any content type, whether it be text, documents, images, videos, links, etc. Padlet also allows students to revisit posts and ideas they may have missed during prior learning experiences, and saves these for potential reference in future weeks.
With lessons presented as animated adventures, games, and challenges, DreamBox is an online elementary (and middle school) math software program that provides personalized learning through lesson development. Driven by Intelligent Adaptive Learning™ technology, DreamBox continually adapts to the individual student, making math relevant for learners and helping students develop stronger math fluency, problem-solving skills, decision-making skills, reasoning, and conceptual understanding.
SeeSaw, which regularly serves as a formative assessment tool in our classrooms, helps teachers see and hear what students have mastered so they can better understand their students' progress and provide more differentiated instruction. Students can capture their learning with photos, audio recordings, and videos of their work, or by adding digital creations. Once submitted, everything gets organized in one place and is accessible to teachers from any device. Student work can be shared with classmates, parents, or published to a class blog. Seesaw gives students a broader audience for their work and offers parents a personalized window into their child's learning.
FlipGrid allows students to create and share their own video content, which in turn exposes them to a new medium of communication while increasing social and emotional skills like self-confidence and public speaking all while sharing their thinking with an authentic audience. Classroom uses include having students respond to literature, explain mathematical thinking, share personal experiences or reflect on their learning. Teachers can easily gather information about their students understanding and growth. Teachers are also afforded the opportunity to hear from all of their students regardless of whether they are typically too shy to speak in front of the whole class or are intimated to speak because English may not be their first language. Flipgrid provides every learner a space to share their thinking no matter what their readiness level!
This Digital Learning Initiative is the result of a multi-year study and year-long planning process led by Joshua Culwell-Block, CCSD Director of Technology and Innovation, the K-12 Technology Committee, and the Innovation Committee, a joint CSF/CCSD team comprised of parents, students, and administrators.
This Digital Learning Initiative also supports our digital learning goals and the Technology Department’s mission of "creating an innovative, agile atmosphere of learning that leverages advanced instructional technologies to support active learning environments."
