Change The Game Google Play Design Challenge
Congratulations to Greeley alum Anna Zhang (’19). She was one of the 5 finalists in this year’s Change The Game Google Play Design Challenge.
Change The Game is an initiative from Google Play to support and empower women as game players and creators. By conducting ongoing research, inspiring youth engagement, partnering with forward-thinking organizations and spotlighting stories of success, they seek to improve representation in the mobile gaming world and create meaningful change in the industry by celebrating and empowering women as players and creators.
By having players help hurt creatures and respond to evil monsters, Anna describes her game -- Brightlove -- as a coming-of-age narrative that encourages players to be kind, take action and help those in danger rather than being mere bystanders. A refreshing contrast to the violence that often permeates mobile games, Brightlove encourages positive actions and rewards kindness.
As a finalist, Anna will serve as the creative director for her game, teaming up with Girls Make Games and game industry veterans to develop and launch her game on Google Play. She also received an all-expenses-paid trip to Los Angeles to showcase her game design and meet the mentors who will be helping to build her game. Anna will also join a celebration of women in gaming, get a VIP tour of Google Los Angeles, a scholarship to attend Girls Make Games Summer Camp and more.
Once asked about her future plans, Anna replied, “To be determined! I hope that my future work is a synthesis of my passions for art and technology.” It looks like she is well on her way in doing just that.
