"Conscious Cafeteria" Takes Home Top Prize
Congratulations to high school students Lori Saxena, Caroline Lerner, Caroline Gershman, Alexandra Fitzgerald, Reilly Carter, Anna Hallac, and faculty advisor MaryRose Joseph.
The team tied for First Place in the Bedford 2020 Greenlight Award Changemaker Contest.
In December, they were selected as one of the 7 finalists for their proposal "Conscious Cafeteria" to promote sustainable food choices among the school community. They received up to $1,000 to put their action-oriented big green idea to cause behavior change and benefit the community into action.
Addressing the problem that livestock agriculture produces around one-half of all man-made emissions, the team worked to cause a cultural shift at HG that increased conscious food choice and drove a change in purchasing decisions by individuals and the District. They built a hydroponic growing system to demonstrate sustainable food and raise awareness about the carbon footprint of various foods. They also tracked behavior change by students and measured change during their campaign with the hopes of inspiring permanent behavior change in the school community.
They showcased their success at the Final Event on April 8th in the Hayloft at Stone Barns Center for Food and Agriculture in Pocantico Hills.
